Charge: The AAIM Innovation Grants Committee is charged with overseeing the AAIM Innovation Grants Program. The committee is responsible for providing guidance on the annual grant’s timeline and process, reviewing submitted letters of interest and grant applications, and selecting grant recipients.

AAIM Medical Education Research Committee

Charge: The AAIM Medical Education Research Committee is charged with developing or facilitating resources/tools that would support the AAIM membership in conducting medical education research as directly related to the strategic plan:

  • Tutorials on how to conduct medical education research.
  • Serve as consultants/resource for workgroups/taskforces/councils as they are implementing Alliance projects to ensure appropriate process and outcome metrics are being considered during early work

  • Outlined content and production timeline to develop video vignettes centered on best practices on successfully designing and executing medical education research and scholarly activities. The first two videos will be released prior to AIMW26.
  • Will host a MERC Collaboration Corner at AIMW26 where members can provide research project consultations and facilitate networking for conference attendees conducting similar med ed research.
  • Finalized the presentation for the group’s AIMW26 workshop, “From Deadly Sins to Effective Habits: Lessons for Medical Education Researchers.”

Task Force Update (as of March 2026)

  • Drafted a data analysis/data support request (with guidance from AAIM Surveys and Research staff) to AAMC for select 2025 Graduation Questionnaire characteristics for a five-year period for comparative purposes, based on fourth-year medical students who reported to have completed one or more away rotations.
  • Meeting scheduled with AACOM and WG Co-Chairs to discuss AACOM’s transition to residency portfolio.

AAIM Structured Evaluative Letter (SEL) Work Group

Task Force Update (as of March 2026)

  • In Winter 2025, AAIM Surveys and Research staff provided summary results from a web survey of departmental letter writers that studied full, partial, and non-adopters’ perspectives on the AAIM IM SEL Template.
  • Surveys staff conducted comparative analyses of the results between survey responses and degree of adoption of the IM SEL Template. Surveys are preparing limited longitudinal comparisons of medical school and departmental letter characteristics collected in 2022 and 2024.
  • Will host a May 20, 2026, webinar that would address the misalignment between the SEL and current assessment tools and the need to translate.
  • Reviewing and revising the SEL FAQs.

To reduce nonresponse bias, AAIM Surveys staff statistically weight-adjusted the results, which have been provided to the APDIM Survey Committee and section leads, including a summary of the weight factor adjustment. Survey topics included: 1. Resident Participation in Scholarly Activities; 2. Application Inflation; and 3. Limited questions about awareness of and use of AAIM’s Individualized Learning Plan.
  • 2025 Annual Survey essay comments intended for the APDIM Council were provided to the Council.
  • 2026 APDIM Annual Survey is under development and will include two thematic sections, with two other topics confined to a limited number of questions.
  • Developing a scholarly manuscript on preferred U.S. clinical training experiences for IMG residency applicants based on 2024 APDIM Annual Survey results, with colleagues from ACP, Intealth, and AAIM Surveys staff.

  • 2026 APDIM Residency and Fellowship Program Administration Annual Survey: Official “institutional” response rate: 55.7 percent (276/496); “individual” response rate: 42.0 percent (419/997). AAIM Surveys staff are currently preparing the summary results report that will inform the AIMW26 Annual Survey presentation.
  • Identified a subgroup to explore 2025 (and, possibly, 2026) Annual Survey results from select Maslach Burnout Inventory “subscales” (e.g., professional efficacy, professional satisfaction) for possible development of a research report, with support from AAIM Surveys staff.

  • 2025 CDIM Annual Survey of Internal Medicine Clerkship Directors: Official response rate of 80.1 percent (113/141). Thematic sections included: Role of Student Feedback in Internal Medicine Clerkship Curriculum; 2. Challenges for Clerkship Directors in Assigning a Failing Grade to a Student; and 3. Precision Education in Internal Medicine Clerkships.
  • Launched the 2026 CDIM Annual Survey call for thematic section proposals, including updated guidelines to 1. Encourage members with timely topic ideas but less research design experience to consider submitting proposals; 2. Limit the number of survey section proposals for which one may serve as a lead or co-contributor; 3. Request the disclosure of the use of AI tools in generating or developing section proposals.
