AAIM Competencies Task Force

Charge:

This task force is charged to identify a set of internal medicine competencies that will be followed across
the educational continuum from student through residency and fellowship.

Task Force Update (as of September 2022)

  • The task force developed a final report outline which will include challenges/barriers to defining competencies that would translate across the continuum, articulate the methodology that led to their selecting the milestones as the cornerstone to their work, and will conclude with their final recommendations to the AAIM Board of Directors.
  • The task force will participate in a discussion forum in September, organized by AAMC to learn about the AAMC/ACGME/AACOM collaboration to develop foundational competencies for UME.

AAIM ERAS Filters Task Force Roster

Charge:

This task force is charged to define a broad range of ERAS filter options that will enable internal medicine programs to sort applicants in ways that are program‐specific, holistic, and meaningful.

Task Force Update (as of September 2022)

The task force is working to finalize their recommendations to the AAIM Board of Directors. Four appendices will be included:

  • A list of salient, existing filters in ERAS and guidance on how the IM education community could optimize these so that effective filtering can be achieved.
  • A list of new filtering features to be shared with ERAS as part of their future R&D efforts.
  • Recommendations on how filtered data may be organized so that PDs may interface more efficiently.
  • Curated resources on best practices that cover holistic review principles in screening applicants.
Task Force representatives will report on the group’s methodology, findings, and recommendations at the 2022 APDIM Fall Meeting. A crowd sourcing exercise will be conducted.

AAIM Interview Standards Task Force

This task force is charged to develop inclusive and equitable standards across internal medicine GME programs for the interview process.

  • The Residency/Fellowship Interview Guideline and the DEI Interview Guideline manuscripts received AAIM endorsement by the AAIM Board of Directors. They will be published in the American Journal of Medicine (AJM) as AAIM Perspective pieces in the fall.
  • The co-chairs met with AMA and the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics (APGO) representative, Maya Hammoud, MD, to learn about the OB/GYN processes in developing standards to the OBGYN Application and Interview Process (SOAIP). A follow-up call is scheduled in September with Dr. Hammoud to discuss collaboration opportunities regarding innovations in the OB/GYN field.

AAIM Learner Handoff Standards Task Force

Charge:

This task force is charged to develop standards for a robust handoff, including elements of an individualized learning plan and GME orientation standards, for learners as they transition from medical school to internal medicine residency, and residency to fellowship.

  • The task force is working to finalize their recommendations to the AAIM Board of Directors.
  • IRB exemption determination for ILP analysis and survey was secured. The survey was deployed to those residency programs participating in the pilot. 
  • An AAIM Perspectives on UME capstone and GME orientation topics was drafted and circulated to the task force for feedback on its structure, suggestions on areas for expansion, as well as refinement guidance. The manuscript will be shared with APDIM and CDIM Councils before formal submission for Alliance endorsement.

Committee Update (as of September 2022)

  • The committee revised its charge for FY23 to focus on developing or facilitating resources/tools that would support the AAIM membership in conducting medical education research. This modification brings more alignment to the AAIM strategic plan.
    • Some examples would include tutorials on how to conduct medical education research, serve as consultants/resource for Alliance volunteer groups, and identify data/metrics that need to be captured to assess the impact of any implemented Alliance projects.
  • Committee members are working to develop a form that would enable AAIM members to request consultation from the committee. They are also working on a review process for submitted requests, to include indicating the audience to whom this would be directed.

  • AAMC identified program characteristics that display in Residency Explorer, along with those characteristics that are non-displays. It was noted that these non-display items are accessible through other data streams, which are available to AAMC. The task force will recommend that AAMC include these components in RE.
  • A few inconsistencies were identified in the platform. Work is underway to collate and share with RE staff.
  • AAMC shared their Supplemental Application’s Research Only inventory. The task force will recommend that AAIM partner with AAMC to incorporate some elements into RE.

The AAIM Research Committee is charged with promoting and sustaining a community of research program directors to develop and share best practices designed to ensure the survival, growth, and diversity of the physician-scientist workforce. The committee will serve as the central body for data collection, analysis, and the dissemination of research-related outcomes of residency and fellowship research programs.

Committee Update (as of September 2022)

  • The committee submitted a manuscript, “Pearls for Aspiring Physician-Scientist Residency Applicants and Program Directors,” to the Journal of Clinical Investigation (JCI) Insights.
  • Developing a survey to assess the experiences of residents and fellows in the physician-scientist pathway. Working with the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) on a formal request to receive data from its Research Pathways database – namely, contact information on its graduates, registered learners, and those that completed their IM Board Examination.
  • The committee is looking to request data from ABIM to examine any changes to its IM Research Pathway track since 2012. Data requested would include demographics, subspeciality training vs. categorical, and pass rates/scores for first-time ABIM certification exams for ABIM research.
  • The committee invited Jodi Yellen, AAMC’s Director of Science Policy, to the September committee call to discuss the physician-scientist home project and other related initiatives.

AAIM Structured Evaluative Letter Task Force

Charge:

This task force is charged to refine the internal medicine structured evaluative letter and study its adoption by medical schools and use by programs.

Task Force Update (as of September 2022)

  • The task force is working to finalize their recommendations to the AAIM Board of Directors.
  • In discussions with AAIM staff, efforts initialized to survey APDIM and CDIM members on their insights and usage of the IM SEL and to study SEL implementation success and barriers cannot be realized due to concerns of survey fatigue and constrained resources. As a result, the SEL Task Force pivoted its efforts to author two manuscripts and develop a workshop for Academic Internal Medicine Week 2023 (AIMW23).
    • Manuscript 1: articulate baseline data centered on the 2021 CDIM Spring Survey results on the Structured Letter of Evaluation (SLOE).
    • Manuscript 2: summarize the SEL implementation efforts and methodology.
