This section provides quarterly updates about Alliance-level “working” committees and work groups. Alliance Committees & Work Groups

AAIM DEI Advisory Group

Charge: A new, two-year entity, the AAIM DEI Advisory Group, is charged to serve in an oversight role to provide recommendations and guidance to the AAIM Board of Directors on strategy, projects, initiatives, and tools developed to ensure the DEI overlay (approved as part the current AAIM Strategic Plan) is used as a focal point for professional development and educational resources created by member councils, committees, and task forces, which may be offered through in-person and virtual programming, publications, surveys, etc. The group will present two deliverables: a year one report about the current status, milestones and anticipated outcomes of AAIM’s DEI efforts; and a final report outlining recommendations for AAIM’s long-term strategy, priorities, next steps, resourcing, and programmatic focus, and outcomes as well as key performance indicators and metrics for success.

AAIM Innovation Grants Committee

Charge: The AAIM Innovation Grants Committee is charged with overseeing the AAIM Innovation Grants Program. The committee is responsible for providing guidance on the annual grant’s timeline and process, reviewing submitted letters of interest and grant applications, and selecting grant recipients.

Committee Update (as of January 2025)

  • The committee is planning its workshop at AIMW25, which will focus on strategies to help educators expand and successfully obtain grant funding for scholarly activities.

  • With the pause on proposal review efforts, the committee is exploring other opportunities to engage. One possible opportunity is to serve as mentors to an ABIMF learning community consisting of past grant recipients. The committee will also study the impact of past DEI and diagnostic excellence grants.

  • Planning continues for the committee’s workshop at AIMW25. The workshop will center on developing medical education scholarships (MES) with existing resources and data. AAIM  Research Committee

Charge: The AAIM Research Committee is charged to develop recommendations for Alliance research strategy which should include assessment of existing educational programming; physician-scientist workforce; engaging the underrepresented in science and medicine and business of medicine components, all directly linked to the physician-scientist career pathway and community.

Committee Update (as of January 2025)

  • The committee is drafting a scholarly manuscript based on results from the 2024 Research-in-Residency / Physician-Scientist Training Program Survey and from additional contributions by select committee members and AAIM Surveys staff. The survey was disseminated to ABIM Research Pathways graduates between 2011 and 2022, as well as current trainees.

  • The 2025 Physician-Scientist Pathways Workshop will be held on April 27, 2025, at the Swissotel, Chicago. The workshop will focus on the future of physician-scientist training, with an emphasis on adapting to the evolving landscape and defining inclusive excellence. The workshop will include programming for attendees in various career stages and specialties. 

  • Planning is ongoing for the committee’s workshop at Academic Internal Medicine Week 2025 (AIMW25). Content will examine how residency programs can implement the R38 Stimulating Access to Research in Residency (StARR) Award to enhance their research track, program, and portfolio. Other various grant opportunities will be presented.

AAIM Residency Application Process Work Group

Task Force Update (as of January 2025)

  • The Interview Optimization Subgroup revised the Guidelines for Residency Interview Scheduling and the Guidance for Residency Interviewing.  Final drafts for both documents are expected by February 2025.  

  • The Student-Program Alignment Subgroup met with the AAMC Residency Explorer (RE) team to share program data inconsistencies that program directors have found regarding their respective program, summarize misleading questions from the ERAS Program Management (EPM) and the GME Track Program surveys, and discuss recommendations.

  • The External Stakeholder Engagement Subgroup met with Thalamus to discuss the technology challenges experienced by program directors and GME administrators. A resource page will be developed prior to the next recruitment cycle. The subgroup also met with AAMC-ERAS to discuss discrepancies in the ERAS system. The subgroup will work with ERAS to inform the Alliance community of future initiatives and enhancements.  

  • In partnership with AAMC-ERAS and Thalamus, conducted a webinar on December 11, 2024.  AAMC-ERAS provided a preliminary report on the 2024-tiered program signal initiative and application trends. Thalamus apprised Alliance members on IM’s participation rates and adoption, as well as shared preliminary interview data. The Student-Program Alignment Subgroup reported on Residency Explorer enhancements.

AAIM Structured Evaluative Letter (SEL) Work Group

Task Force Update (as of January 2025)

  • AAIM Surveys and Research staff launched a web survey to over 200 departmental summative letter writers (at allopathic, osteopathic, and select non-U.S. medical schools) on January 8, 2025 to study full, partial, and non-adopters’ perspectives on the AAIM IM SEL Template. The survey is expected to close in early April.

  • The work group will examine the SEL through the lens of IMGs and DOs and discuss the feasibility of a GME – GME SEL.

  • Closed the 2024 APDIM Annual Residency Program Directors Survey, with a 55.3 percent response rate (263/476 ACGME-accredited training programs).

  • Drafted a research letter based on three consecutive years of APDIM Annual Survey data, using predictive modeling to estimate anticipated residency program director full-time equivalent allotments.

  • Blind-reviewed and scored six thematic sections proposals for the 2025 APDIM Annual Survey, and accepted two for inclusion: “Residency Application Inflation” and “Research in Residency.”

Task Force Update (as of January 2025)

  • Closed the 2024 CDIM Annual Survey of Core Internal Medicine Clerkship Directors in December, with a response rate of 80.1 percent (113/141 LCME-accredited medical schools).

  • Planning to launch the 2025 CDIM Annual Survey call for thematic section proposals on January 27.

  • Developing (or developed) three scholarly manuscripts from the 2023 CDIM Annual Survey, one of which is awaiting a decision from Academic Medicine.

  • With AAIM Surveys staff, developed a draft bibliography of CDIM Annual Survey-based scholarly works to include on the CDIM Annual Survey portion of the Alliance website early in 2025.
