Committee and Work Group News

AAIM committees and work groups support the strategic plan and critical initiatives that impact the organization and profession. This section provides quarterly updates about Alliance-level “working” committees and work groups. Alliance Committees & Work Groups

AAIM DEI Advisory Group

Charge: A new, two-year entity, the AAIM DEI Advisory Group, is charged to serve in an oversight role to provide recommendations and guidance to the AAIM Board of Directors on strategy, projects, initiatives, and tools developed to ensure the DEI overlay (approved as part the current AAIM Strategic Plan) is used as a focal point for professional development and educational resources created by member councils, committees, and task forces, which may be offered through in-person and virtual programming, publications, surveys, etc. The group will present two deliverables: a year one report about the current status, milestones and anticipated outcomes of AAIM’s DEI efforts; and a final report outlining recommendations for AAIM’s long-term strategy, priorities, next steps, resourcing, and programmatic focus, and outcomes as well as key performance indicators and metrics for success.

AAIM Innovation Grants Committee

Charge: The AAIM Innovation Grants Committee is charged with overseeing the AAIM Innovation Grants Program. The committee is responsible for providing guidance on the annual grant’s timeline and process, reviewing submitted letters of interest and grant applications, and selecting grant recipients.

Committee Update (as of September 2023)

  • The committee participated in AAIM’s partnership in the Building Trust through DEI Grants program. Twenty programs were awarded grants in FY23, collectively receiving $470,000 in funding.
  • Leaders of AAIM, ABIMF, ACP, and the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation will meet in early October to debrief on FY23 grants and to begin discussion on FY24. The program is expected to commence in November 2023; a new platform will be utilized to manage the administration process.
  • The committee is reviewing potential scope expansions for FY24: 1) offering grant coaching and feedback for applicants and 2) studying long-term impacts of past grant recipient projects.

AAIM Medical Education Research Committee

Charge: The AAIM Medical Education Research Committee is charged with developing or facilitating resources/tools that would support the AAIM membership in conducting medical education research as directly related to the strategic plan:

  • Tutorials on how to conduct medical education research.
  • Serve as consultants/resource for workgroups/taskforces/councils as they are implementing Alliance projects to ensure appropriate process and outcome metrics are being considered during early work

AAIM  Research Committee

Charge: The AAIM Research Committee is charged to develop recommendations for Alliance research strategy which should include assessment of existing educational programming; physician-scientist workforce; engaging the underrepresented in science and medicine and business of medicine components, all directly linked to the physician-scientist career pathway and community.

Committee Update (as of September 2023)

  • A manuscript that guides faculty and medical students in the transition from medical school to internal medicine physician-scientist training programs was submitted to eLife. A second manuscript on the duration of post-graduate training of career development awards is near completion and will be submitted to the Journal of Clinical Investigation (JCI).
  • Collaborating with the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) to disseminate a survey to its ABIM Research Pathway and its graduates, registered learners, and those that completed their IM Board Examination to understand the experiences of trainees in the physician-scientist pathway.
  • Developing workshop abstract for Academic Internal Medicine Week 2024.
  • Working to develop additional resources for the physician-scientist, research-in-residency, and medical-scientist communities: webinars, tutorials, educational videos, etc.

AAIM ERAS Integration Work Group

  • Catherine E. Apaloo, MD, FACP and Cindy Lai, MD will lead the work group.
  • The co-chairs will participate in a joint APDIM and CDIM leadership planning meeting to discuss potential topics for quarterly meetings with AAMC-ERAS executives.
  • A co-chair planning meeting is scheduled for mid-September. Historical and contextual information will be shared to provide background on the workplan. Discussions from the APDIM-CDIM leadership planning meeting may impact the work group’s efforts. The scaffolding for FY24 activities will be developed to meet the milestones set forth in the workplan.

AAIM Structured Evaluative Letter (SEL) Work Group

Task Force Update (as of September 2023)

  • Wendy M. Simon, MD and Aimee K. Zaas, MD, MHS will lead the work group.
  • A co-chair planning meeting recently took place. IMG perspectives on SEL utilization is key to understanding the full scope of the SEL’s utility.
  • A FY24 workplan itemizing activities that need to be accomplished to meet the milestones articulated in the master workplan will be developed.

  • The 2023 APDIM Annual Survey of IM Residency Program Directors (PDs) launched on August 10, 2023, with a survey-eligible population of 490 PDs.
  • Manuscript published in AAIM Perspectives: “Internal Medicine Residency Program Director Awareness and Mitigation of Residents’ Experiences of Bias and Discrimination,” based on the 2021 APDIM Annual Survey.
  • Manuscript in review by JGME: “Management of the Electronic Health Record Inbox,” based on the 2021 APDIM Annual Survey.
  • Manuscript in review by AAIM Perspectives: “Do Current Hiring Processes for Residency and Associate Program Directors Foster Diversity in Educational Leadership?” based on the 2021 APDIM Annual Survey.

CDIM Survey and Scholarship Committee

Task Force Update (as of September 2023)

  • The 2023 CDIM Annual Survey of Core Internal Medicine Clerkship Directors (CDs) will launch on September 12, with a survey-eligible population of 147 CDs.
  • Manuscript accepted by Academic Medicine: “Bias reporting in the clinical learning environment: A national survey of internal medicine clerkship directors,” based the on 2021 CDIM Annual Survey.
  • Accepted for publication by JGIM: “IM Residency Program Directors’ Impressions of the Electronic Residency Application Service Supplemental Application,” (research letter) based on the 2021 ACP IM-ITE Program Directors Survey.
