What inspired you to pursue a career in medicine, and when did you realize it was the right path for you?
My pathway into medicine began when I was asked to become the University of Southern California's (USC) premed advisor to the BA/MD program at the now, USC Keck SOM. It was an incredible experience to work with a select group of talented students wanting to help humankind. I learned so much about the educational foundation and extracurricular experiences they needed to have in order to become successful as future medical students. Having earned a Master's in Higher Education Administration and Student Affairs while at USC, strengthen my advising abilities to provide support, coaching, and mentoring to the premedical student population. I was very involved with the National Association of Advisors for the Health Professions (NAAHP) that offered professional opportunities to meet with medical school admissions officers and physicians from across the nation to better understand what they were looking for in future candidates to their medical school and the profession. Having a national network of trusted colleagues was important to the work I was doing. My initial work inspired me to work at a medical school association in DC and eventually I became a Director of Admissions at a US medical school. Later, I worked at a medical specialty society and now am on the other end of the medical education continuum in GME Fellowship. It's been fun to tell people; "I've done everything in medical education except take an MCAT and go to medical school myself!" The profession of medicine and the physicians I know and have worked with are truly inspiring. I can't think of a better career to be engaged in and am so fortunate to love what I do!
Which aspect of your work brings you the greatest fulfillment?
The greatest fulfilment of my work was seeing my former premedical students receive acceptances to medical school and then get the matches they hoped for. Now I get to witness my Fellows graduating and start their careers which is wonderful. In addition, knowing the passion, commitment, and intellectual curiosity for life-long learning that medicine requires and seeing how the physicians, trainees, and medical students work hard toward this each day gives me constant hope in the science and research that brings medical care to the world. It is incredibly fulfilling to know I am a small part of this journey with them.
How do you envision your AAIM membership contributing to your professional growth and career development?
As a new AAIM member, I am excited about the opportunities to continue to learn more about Internal Medicine, the advocacy work they are engaged in and network with colleagues who have deep experience being involved with AAIM. I'm open to joining committees to support AAIM goals and enhance the work I am engaged in. In April I will attend my first AAIM 2026 meeting and look forward to making new professional connections there!
Who or what has been the most influential source of inspiration in your journey, and why?
Over the course of my career in higher education and medical education, there have been many individuals that have inspired me due to their passion for excellence in the work they did. In particular, several women physicians whom I have had the professional pleasure to work with have shown me that not only were they leaders, but their voices and experience carried power to influence and affect change in profound ways. They didn't need to be the loudest, they needed their expertise to stand out while being firm. I admired the way they carried themselves and how they were able to achieve their goals in the face of challenges; whether limited resources or financial to achieve a positive outcome. They helped level the playing field and showed that you never give up - there are always ways to resolve differences.
Outside of work, what activities or hobbies bring you joy?
I have always enjoyed spending time around water, whether at the beach or poolside. There is something restful and tranquil about listening to the sounds of water whether you are swimming, just floating around or looking at it from the landside. Additionally, I love to hike and take long walks. It's such a great way to clear your mind, keep in shape, and enjoy the beautiful scenery around you.
