SEL Mismatch: Aligning the Template with Reality

The Structured Evaluative Letter (SEL) was first developed in 2021 in response to the Coalition for Physician Accountability’s recommendations. Since then, the AAIM SEL Work Group (SEL WG) has been established to assess the SEL’s efficacy and develop educational recommendations to support its broader adoption within the internal medicine community.

In November 2025, the SEL WG conducted semi-structured interviews with SEL authors who fully adopted, partially adopted, or chose not to adopt the SEL Template. One key challenge identified was the misalignment between the SEL and existing UME assessment tools, highlighting the need for effective translation across systems.

To address this challenge, webinar presenters will:

• Offer guidance on developing a framework to support translation across varying grading criteria
• Share best practices for adapting the SEL to institutional data and needs and
• Provide technical resources and practical tips for data management and translation
