SEL Mismatch: Aligning the Template with Reality

When:  May 20, 2026 from 01:00 PM to 02:00 PM (ET)
The Structured Evaluative Letter (SEL) was first developed in 2021 in response to the Coalition for Physician Accountability’s recommendations.  Since then, an AAIM SEL Work was established to study the SEL’s efficacy and develop educational offerings to further its adoption in the internal medicine community.
In November 2025, the SEL WG held semi-structured interviews with SEL authors who either fully adopted, partially adopted, or elected to not adopt the SEL Template.  Based on these discussions, the following questions were raised:
  • What elements in the IM SEL do program directors, program coordinators, and faculty care about?
  • What are you allowed to “say” in an SEL?
  • How do we promote the true purpose of the SEL, which is to advocate for the skillsets of an applicant and prepare program directors (PDs) for resources a learner might need when they match to a program?
  • How can the comments sections be used to contextualize numerical data with background information, and cite experiential feedback?
  • How can schools aggregate disparate assessment data into the IM SEL template?

This webinar aims to answer these questions by sharing best practices on how to translate current clerkship assessment tools and grading criteria into the SEL.
