Presenting patient histories and key clinical findings to an attending physician is one of the daily tasks of being a resident physician. Traditionally, medical school training has focused on the admission and daily presentation of inpatients (i.e. SOAP presentations: Subjective, Objective, Assessment, Plan). Less time has been spent training students to present patients in the outpatient setting, and there has not been a universally accepted presentation format for clinic patients. As a result, incoming interns are less comfortable presenting outpatients than they are presenting inpatients.
SOAP style presentations are difficult to adapt to clinic patients who require attention to acute issues, chronic diseases, and preventive care all within the time constraints of a clinic schedule. Many strategies for teaching in clinic presume only one chief complaint and don’t give guidance on teaching with the typical complicated internal medicine clinic patient. This webinar will help participants conceptualize a better approach to standardizing resident clinic precepting presentations, thereby reducing cognitive load and allowing a greater focus on teaching and learning.
The webinar will share the experiences of multiple institutions of different sizes who have implemented this approach in their continuity clinics and are at various stages in the implementation process. Participants will be given the opportunity to plan implementation at their own institutions with guidance from presenters and peers.
