May 2026 Diversity Now Newsletter

May 2026

Welcome to Diversity Now, AAIM’s quarterly newsletter dedicated to sharing the latest inclusive excellence resources in academic internal medicine and beyond.

Honoring Heritage and Community

This May, we recognize Asian-American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month and Jewish American Heritage Month. These observances offer important opportunities to reflect on the innovation and leadership of AANHPI and Jewish Americans in academic internal medicine and beyond.

Resources to Support International Medical Graduates

IMGs play a critical role in the US physician workforce. According to AAMC data, in 2024, 25.6% of active physicians were IMGs, with more than 60% of foreign trained physicians practicing in primary care.

To support IMGs preparing for residency, Intealth has launched the Transition to Residency (T2R) Resource Hub, a centralized online collection of tools designed to ease the transition into US residency programs. Resources include introductory learning modules, well being resources, a medical terminology glossary, and practical onboarding tools. Intealth also offers guidance on Visa interviews (PDF download) to help incoming physicians along the J-1 process prepare to clearly and accurately represent their educational pathway and intent to participate in graduate medical education.

Even Better Together

At this year’s Academic Internal Medicine Week, attendees added their threads to the collaborative tapestry board, visually weaving together the attributes that define the Alliance community.

Participants also shared the books, podcasts, and “a-ha” moments that have inspired their work, leadership, and professional growth. Highlights included Atomic Habits by James Clear; Being Mortal by Atul Gawande; When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi; The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down by Anne Fadiman; Radical Candor by Kim Scott; and Emotional Intelligence by Daniel Goleman. Frequently cited podcasts included The Curbsiders, Core IM, and The Nocturnists.

Learning the Language of DEI

As conversations around health equity continue to evolve, understanding how inequities are measured and discussed remains increasingly important. The World Health Organization recently released updated versions of its Health Inequality Data Repository and Health Equity Assessment Toolkit (HEAT), resources designed to help organizations analyze disparities across factors such as geography, education, economic status, disability, and gender. The tools aim to support a more data-informed understanding of where inequities exist and how they may be addressed.

The Alliance Supports Virtual Interviewing for Fellowship and Residency Recruitment

AAIM remains committed to an equitable and transparent residency and fellowship recruitment process for both applicants and training programs. Current Alliance guidance recommends virtual interviews for all applicants, including learners at their home institutions, while making in-person visits optional. These recommendations are intended to support fairness, transparency, the educational and clinical mission, and the health and safety of applicants.
