Ricardo Correa, MD, EdD

It is with genuine enthusiasm and deep respect for the mission of the Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine (AAIM) and the Association of Specialty Professors (ASP) that I am applying for the position of President-Elect of ASP-AAIM. Having served on the ASP Council since 2021, first as Member-at-Large of the Council and currently as Treasurer and member of the AAIM Finance Committee. I have developed an in-depth understanding of our organization’s governance, financial stewardship, and strategic priorities. This service has strengthened my conviction that ASP must continue to advance excellence in subspecialty education, research, and diversity through inclusive leadership and inter-organizational collaboration.

Throughout my tenure, I have represented ASP across multiple AAIM committees and task forces, including the Resident Application Process Work Group, Post-Communication Task Force, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Task Force, Annual Scientific Program Committee, and the Standard Letter of Application initiative, among others. I have also participated as ASP’s representative and speaker for numerous AAIM webinars and workshops, addressing topics such as the importance of signaling, the role of International Medical Graduates in the U.S. healthcare workforce, and best practices in academic mentorship, among other across the years. These experiences have provided me with both the breadth of perspective and the collegial relationships necessary to serve as an effective bridge between ASP, AAIM, and our many partnering societies.

Beyond AAIM, I have built collaborative partnerships other national organizations to promote educational innovation and support for the academic workforce. My diverse portfolio of service across the multiple organizations has equipped me with a panoramic understanding of organized medicine and inter-society cooperation—an essential asset for the ASP President-Elect as we continue to harmonize AAIM’s advocacy, leadership development, and scholarly missions.

If elected, my priorities as President-Elect will focus on three guiding pillars:

  1. Strengthening ASP’s voice within the Alliance through proactive engagement with subspecialty partners and alignment of goals across AAIM councils.
  2. Expanding inclusion and mentorship, amplifying the perspectives of IMGs, URM faculty, and early-career educators who represent the future of academic internal medicine.
  3. Enhancing fiscal stewardship and sustainability, ensuring that ASP and AAIM remains a model of transparency, accountability, and innovation.

I am honored to be considered for this opportunity to serve the ASP-AAIM community (as ASP President-elect), and I look forward to contributing my skills, experience, and passion to the continued success of our Alliance.
