Director, Florida Atlantic University Internal Medicine Residency Program
Associate Professor, Integrated Medical Science
Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine at Florida Atlantic University

How long have you been a member of AAIM?

I have been a member of the Alliance since I was first appointed as the senior associate program director for Internal Medicine in 2007 at New York Medical College and Westchester Medical Center. I then became Program Director in 2011 and stayed until 2017. Since then I have moved on to Florida Atlantic University as Program Director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program.

Describe your typical day.

The best part of the job is that there isn’t one typical day for me. It varies and that is what I like about being a program director. It’s a combination of administrative, teaching, and clinical responsibilities. One day I could be running intern report in the morning and subsequently visiting the clinic to see patients and then returning to meet with residency staff. On other days I could be attending on the inpatient teaching service or I could be doing research. It gives me great flexibility. I also teach medical students as part of my responsibilities.

What is your favorite part of the job?

I enjoy being a preceptor in the resident clinic. Another favorite part of my job is going over the differential diagnosis during resident report.

How has the AAIM membership been of value to you and your career?

My membership in the Alliance has certainly helped me network with colleagues across the nation. It’s of tremendous value to be able to share ideas with other faculty and program directors and to learn what’s new in the field from experienced leaders. I have been involved in academic innovation and had the privilege to present my work at the meetings. All this has been possible because I have been a member of the Alliance. It has been one of the most beneficial experiences for me and helped me grow as an educator and an administrator as well.

What's your favorite moment of your career so far?

A favorite moment was when I was told I would be appointed Program Director. I was then able to go through the Match and recruit my first group of residents. The first year was certainly something I treasure and I am proud of.

What was your childhood dream job?

My father is a physician and I grew up dreaming of becoming one myself. It was always something at the top of the list. I was fortunate enough to get into medical school.

How do you spend your free time?

I now live in Boca Raton, Florida so at least during January and February I can escape the winter after spending 20 years in New York and Connecticut. I have two boys ages 11 and 12 years old. At this stage, it is more about taking them to their Little League baseball practices and games. My wife and the kids love spending time on the beach.

What’s one thing people would be surprised to know about you?

I think it may surprise some that I am an avid fan of watching crime thrillers and reading books about espionage. I still remain a big Yankees fan despite having moved to Florida.
