Dear Colleague: It is my pleasure to share the following Alliance Year in Review. Although I only recently started the new position of AAIM Chief Executive Officer, it has been exciting to see, and share in, the many accomplishments of the Alliance leadership, volunteers, and staff, particularly another record-breaking year for both membership renewal and Academic Internal Medicine Week registration. As we face new challenges in our environment, the community and collaborative spirit of the Alliance will be increasingly important to us all. AAIM is committed to providing the content, education, critical networking opportunities, and growing relationships with key stakeholders to ensure the needs of our departments, programs, faculty, administrators, learners, and patients are met. The Alliance is powered by volunteers who build the resources that allow internal medicine to lead the way in academic internal medicine. Supporting the advancement and professional development of our members who prepare the next generation of internal medicine physicians and leaders is our mission. Please enjoy the following review of some significant accomplishments in FY 2025. I look forward to another successful year as the Alliance continues to be Even Better Together! Sincerely,
Erica J. Holland Alliance Chief Executive Officer
Highlights from FY 2025
- In an effort to address application inflation, AAIM informed AAMC-ERAS that internal medicine would continue using three “gold” and 12 “silver” program signals for the 2025-2026 residency application season. Data indicates that program signals increase the likelihood of an applicant to receive an interview offer at a residency program of their choice.
- In March, the Alliance joined 600 organizations in a letter urging Congress to fully fund the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the FY 2025 appropriations bill and prevent cuts to reimbursement for NIH grantee facilities and administrative costs.
- In April, AAIM joined more than 500 health and research organizations signing the Coalition for Health Funding's letter urging full funding for the Department of Health and Human Services in FY 2026.
- Changes to AAIM governance, effective July 1, 2025, shifted the AAIM Board of Directors from an appointment-based entity to a competency-based, expertise-driven structure. As part of this transition, the Alliance will establish the AAIM Nominating Committee to develop competencies and rubrics to facilitate vetting and selection for AAIM Board At-Large Members and Officers.
- The AAIM Digital Learning Center introduced a new educational offering, Business of Medicine for UME-GME Faculty Online Course, specifically for physicians.
- In April, Academic Internal Medicine Week 2025 set a new record for attendance, drawing more than 3,600 participants to New Orleans, LA. The event featured 3,483 registrants, 558 speakers, 31 exhibitors, five precourses, 17 plenaries, 146 poster abstracts, and 137 workshops.
- Additionally, the Alliance successfully convened APM Winter Meeting 2025 and 2024 APDIM Fall Meeting, bringing members together for valuable education and peer networking.
- A new online community for vice chairs for education was created, proving a place to discuss issues and share resources about finance, faculty development, advocacy, and what it means to be a vice chair for education.
- The 10th anniversary of the Alliance was marked by the release of "Even Better Together", a publication celebrating the very best aspects of AAIM, including: its commitment to building stronger relationships with stakeholders and societies, the networks and communities built across a variety of programs and institutions, and the resources developed to assist faculty and staff manage the day-to-day work of building the future internal medicine workforce.
