Learning the Language of DEI

Black Tax: The term "black tax" refers to the financial support that Black professionals are expected to give their extended families. It also describes the racial dimensions that perpetuate a cycle of inequality such as lower pay and a lower standard of education.

Code-Switching: The act of adjusting one’s style of speech, appearance, behavior, and expression in ways that will optimize the comfort of others in exchange for fair treatment, quality service, and employment opportunities. Code-switching often occurs in spaces where negative stereotypes of people run counter to what the dominant culture considers "appropriate" behavior and norms within a specific environment.
