Alliance Committees & Work Groups

AAIM DEI Advisory Group

Charge: A new, two-year entity, the AAIM DEI Advisory Group, is charged to serve in an oversight role to provide recommendations and guidance to the AAIM Board of Directors on strategy, projects, initiatives, and tools developed to ensure the DEI overlay (approved as part the current AAIM Strategic Plan) is used as a focal point for professional development and educational resources created by member councils, committees, and task forces, which may be offered through in-person and virtual programming, publications, surveys, etc. The group will present two deliverables: a year one report about the current status, milestones and anticipated outcomes of AAIM’s DEI efforts; and a final report outlining recommendations for AAIM’s long-term strategy, priorities, next steps, resourcing, and programmatic focus, and outcomes as well as key performance indicators and metrics for success.

AAIM Innovation Grants Committee

Charge: The AAIM Innovation Grants Committee is charged with overseeing the AAIM Innovation Grants Program.   • The Building Trust Through DEI Grants program launched on February 5, 2024. The final recipients will be selected in August 2024. 
  • The Innovation Grants Committee established initiatives that align with the committee’s core charge: 1) Serve as judges for the Building Trust Through Diversity, Health Care Equity, Inclusion and Diagnostic Excellence in Internal Medicine Training; 2) Submit a workshop for AIMW25 consideration; and 3) Examine outcomes from past grant recipients.

  • The committee will staff a booth at AIMW24.  Their meter board will display QR codes that navigate attendees to the Committee and Work Group News and the Med Ed Research Committee Consultation webpage.  A separate QR code will be generated so that visitors to the committee booth can enter research questions and fledgling scholarly activities that require committee counsel.  
  • Their committee-produced AIMW24 workshop is scheduled for Tuesday, April 16, 2024, from 10:15 am – 11:15 am (EDT)
  • The committee’s webinar, Making Medical Education Research Less Murky: Introduction to the Medical Education Research Committee, will take place on Thursday, March 21, 2024, from 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm (EDT)

Committee Update (as of March 2024)

  • The Research-in-Residency (RiR) and Physician-Scientist Training Program (PSTP) Trainee survey underwent extensive review by both the committee and the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM).  It is now undergoing pilot testing by both Research Committee members and a select group of recent graduates, residents, and fellows.  
  • Program officers and other leaders from the National Institute of Health (NIH) were invited to speak at the 2024 Research Pathways Directors Annual Workshop.  These officers will address the K/CDA applications and comment on the future of aspiring physician-scientists’ scholarly efforts, to include challenges and identifying areas of improvement.  Other topics that will be discussed are department and institutional funding challenges for early-stage physician-scientists and strategies to optimize the timelines for physician-scientists transitioning to independent practice.  
  • The committee-produced Academic Internal Medicine Week 2024 (AIMW24) session, Best Practices to Establish a Robust Resident Scholarly Research Portfolio, will take place on Tuesday, April 16, 2024, from 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm (EDT).

Task Force Update (as of March 2024)

  • The original 15 domains were pared down to five: 1) Standard Definition of an Away Clinical Rotation, 2) Evaluations, 3) Equity and Advocacy, 4) Student Advising, and 5) Value Proposition.  Each domain was further articulated, with proposed outputs and steps to achieve those ends.  
  • The work group will divide the work among two subgroups: 1) UME Perspectives Subgroup and 2) GME Perspectives Subgroup.  Foci discussion is ongoing.

AAIM Residency Application Process Work Group

Task Force Update (as of March 2024)

  • The work group met with American Medical Association (AMA) executives and volunteer leaders to learn more about the Alignment Check Index (ACI) platform and its functionalities.  
  • The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) executives informed the work group of Residency Explorer’s (RE) expanded research initiative and platform enhancement.  AAMC will demo the platform to the work group.  
  • Three subgroups were established to drive the work group’s efforts to success: 1) Tiered Signaling Subgroup, 2) Student-Program Alignment Subgroup, and 3) External Stakeholder Subgroup.

AAIM Structured Evaluative Letter (SEL) Work Group

Task Force Update (as of March 2024)

  • The work group completed its data gathering exercise and reviewed its preliminary descriptive data.  Common themes for full SEL adopters, partial SEL adopters, and non SEL adopters will be determined.  Data from the FY22 data gathering exercise conducted by the former AAIM SEL Task Force and data from this current exercise will be compared.  
  • In collaboration with the AAIM Survey and Research Team, the work group will develop survey instruments to study full, partial, and non-adopters’ perspectives.  This would necessitate a representative cross-sectional sampling of each population.  The study protocol to acquire IRB exemption is underway.
