AAMC-ERAS Resources and Initiatives for the IM Community

The Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS)® is a program of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), developed to streamline the residency and fellowship application process for participating academic medical specialties and subspecialties.  The AAMC selection tools, along with its research efforts and the data culled from these efforts, are meant to support and sustain an equitable and efficient transition to residency.

In an effort to address the complexities of the UME – GME transition, AAIM (Alliance) and AAMC have worked collaboratively to undertake aspects of these intricacies. From initiating program signals to address application inflation and interview disparities, to enhancements to the Residency Explorer Tool to provide greater transparency and utility for Internal Medicine applicants, AAIM and AAMC have and will continue to partner to address the transition conundrum.

As AAMC continues its research and data gathering efforts in the transition space, the Alliance collated AAMC resources to help the Internal Medicine community make informed decisions as it plans for the upcoming recruitment season.

The Residency Explorer Tool helps applicants search for residency programs best align with their goals.  Learners can find useful information like program characteristics, resident demographics, research opportunities, and other unique educational offerings.  The tool allows applicants to compare between programs.  Visit the AAIM webpage on Residency Explorer for more IM-specific information.

Clinical and Research Opportunities Database Program

The Clinical and Research Opportunities Database Program is now in the Visiting Students Learning Opportunities (VSLO) Platform. Historically, this database was in the Careers in Medicine (CiM) website, but has moved to the Visiting Scholars Resource Database. This database highlights unique opportunities for students who are interested in exploring away clinical rotations.

Dean's Office WorkStation (DWS) Analytics

The Deans’ Office Workstation is accessible to Deans and those they grant access to.  Medical school faculty and staff can access data upon authorization from the Dean’s Office.  The DWS Analytics dashboard will display data from the Visiting Students Learning Opportunities (VSLO) program, which will be helpful for faculty and administrators who work with M3 students as they prepare for away rotations.  Further, there are residency interview data in aggregate and individual student details about the specialties students have applied to.
