Recent NRMP Examinations of Internal Medicine Data: Signaling and Ranking Behaviors in Relation to A

When:  Jan 14, 2026 from 02:00 PM to 03:00 PM (ET)

This session will provide an in-depth exploration of two recent NRMP initiatives aimed at examining internal medicine (IM)-specific program signaling data.

  • In collaboration with AAMC and NBME, NRMP has been examining the impact of program signaling on three outcomes of interest. This session will explore whether applicants: 1) were included on a program’s rank order list (ROL), 2) were included on the competitive portion of a program’s ROL (i.e., top 25th percentile), and 3) matched to a program.
  • NRMP has been exploring the Match outcomes of applicants who ranked IM anywhere on their ROL and of applicants who preferred IM. This session provides insight into the ranking behaviors of those who received IM positions via the matching algorithm or Supplemental Offer and Acceptance Program (SOAP). The presenter also shares some of the characteristics (e.g., applicant type, previous Match participation) of applicants who preferred/ranked IM but did not receive any residency position.
