Shyam Chalise, MD
Program Director
Presence Saint Joseph Hospital Chicago

How long have you been a member of AAIM?

Eight years.

What is your favorite part of your job?

Being an educator—getting to know the residents and learning from them every day.

How has the AAIM membership been of value to you and your career?

AAIM has been the platform to meet and get inspired by great academic leaders. It has also been a forum to get issues clarified based on response and experience from other colleagues.

What’s your favorite moment of your career so far?

Being the program director at the same program that I trained. It has been a very humbling journey from intern to chief resident and now program director.

What was your childhood dream job?

To be a teacher.

How do you spend your free time?

I spend time with family (wife and two daughters); I also run (I have been able to complete Chicago marathon for last six years in a row).

What is your favorite book (or movie)?

The Kite Runner (the book; not the movie version), “I got immersed emotionally in the book, within the words.”

What is the best advice that you have ever received?

From my parents—"Always be true to yourself. Find time daily to do self-introspection, which gives one lots of inner peace.”
