May 2025 Diversity Now Newsletter

May 2025

Welcome to Diversity Now, AAIM’s quarterly newsletter dedicated to sharing the latest diversity, equity, and inclusion resources in academic internal medicine and beyond.

Honoring Heritage and Community

This May, we recognize Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month and Jewish American Heritage Month. These observances offer important opportunities to reflect on the innovation and leadership of AANHPI and Jewish Americans in academic internal medicine and beyond.

Culturally Informed Care for Indigenous Communities

Recent efforts highlight the importance of culturally responsive care for American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) populations. A study from The University of New Mexico underscores the need for community-based solutions to improve health care access for Native elders. Additionally, a new educational tool published in MedEdPORTAL introduces medical learners to traditional healing practices in AI/AN communities to enhance cultural competence and patient trust.

Discover how one state is working to build a stronger rural health workforce, highlighting early outcomes of targeted programs designed to address persistent health disparities in underserved communities in this AAMC article.

AAMC CHARGE Webinar

Join AAMC CHARGE (Collaborative for Health Equity: Act, Research, Generate Evidence) on June 12 at 2 p.m. ET for a special webinar previewing new research aimed at advancing health equity. Five AAMC CHARGE member teams were selected to explore their own health equity-focused research questions using exclusive polling data from the AAMC Center for Health Justice. During this session, each team will share early findings from their studies, highlighting how the results can help inform policy and drive meaningful change.

Wellness Resource: Pause A Moment

PAM (Pause A Moment) is a free online tool developed by Stanford University School of Medicine faculty and collaborators to support well-being through personalized strategies for stress management, self-care, and resilience. Originally launched in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the platform was designed with health care workers in mind and may be helpful for those navigating ongoing uncertainty and complex professional challenges.
