Member Spotlight: Marc Shalaby, MD

Dr. Marc Shalaby, MD
Program Director - Primary Care
Raymond and Ruth Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania

How long have you been a member of AAIM?

Sixteen years.

What is your favorite part of your job?  Helping residents think about and then find their path to the next step in their career.

How has the AAIM membership been of value to you and your career?  It has provided a community of incredibly talented, like-minded people who are always willing to share their work and experience selflessly.  It has also provided me with valuable friendships that have made the meetings a series of “home-coming” events.

When did you know you wanted to pursue a career in the medical field?

Second semester, junior year of college.

What or who inspires you and why?

The series of formal and peer mentors that I have had over the years.  All have greatly shaped me and my career and have always responded with “of course” when I have needed help, advice, and direction (Jack F., Jack E., Lisa, Bill, Ted, Dom, Gopal, Todd, Abby, Paul, Gretchen, Aimee, Ken, John, and so many others)

What advice would you give to those who wish to pursue a career in academic internal medicine?

With all of the changes and upheavals in medicine, taking care of patients and teaching others to do the same are great privileges and combining the two is still the most rewarding job in the world.

What is your favorite book or movie?

“11/22/63: A Novel” by Stephen King
