Beginning an Internal Medicine Residency Program: A 5-Year Look Back at Building from the Ground Up

The growth nationally in GME to meet increasing population health and patient care needs has led to the beginning of many new residency programs within internal medicine.  While both the need and will to begin a new residency program is present, the practical steps to take following accreditation is not something for which a step by step "how to" process is widely available. 

Recognizing the variability within the institutions involved in starting these new programs, there is not a one size fits all approach.  However, there are some common threads rooted in the accreditation requirements and the specialty of Internal Medicine, with this session targeting important elements in beginning a residency program from the ground up.  Based on reflections from our own experience in doing this over the first five years, the presenters aim to share a framework and roadmap along with tools to guide other new programs while also providing encouragement towards the opportunities ahead.
