2027 Alliance Awards

Each year the Alliance and its charter associations honor members of the academic internal medicine community for outstanding leadership, dedication, and service to the profession and the organization through the AAIM Awards Program. With many different awards designed to honor various positions within departments of medicine and the internal medicine community, there is ample opportunity to ensure your colleagues are recognized for their commitment, enthusiasm, and expertise.

Dema C. Daley Founders Award

About the Award

The APDIM Dema C. Daley Founders Award honors a member of the internal medicine community recognized nationally as an educator, innovator, and leader.

In 2003, APDIM dedicated the award to Dema C. Daley. Ms. Daley served as APDIM Executive Director from 1987 to 2000; recognizing her contributions, the APDIM Council promoted her to Executive Vice President in 2001, a position she held until her death in July 2002. During her 15 years as the association’s leader, Ms. Daley helped APDIM become “the preeminent professional organization in graduate medical education noted for its promotion of excellence and innovation in leadership and educational methodologies.” The award is presented annually during Academic Internal Medicine Week.

Nomination Criteria

• The nominee must be a current member of APDIM at the time of nomination.
• In selecting a recipient, predominant attention is given to the candidate’s influence in undergraduate and graduate medical education and the candidate’s contributions toward the overall advancement and innovation of training programs in internal medicine. Long-standing active membership, participation, and leadership in APDIM as well as in other medical educational organizations are expected.
• The nominee must not be the recipient of an APDIM award in the past three award years. Please note, if a nominee is a current board, council, or executive committee member at the time the award recipient is being selected, they are not eligible for award consideration.

Distinguished Community Medical Educator Award

About the Award

The APDIM Distinguished Community Medical Educator Award honors a member of the internal medicine community who has demonstrated exceptional, sustained achievement in graduate medical education.

APDIM has long recognized excellence in medical education across a variety of settings. Cognizant of the unique challenges of education in the community hospital setting, and the special skills needed to excel therein, APDIM decided in 2020 to create a new award. This award honors those educators who have made either a lasting local or regional impact, or who have made significant national contributions based on their work as educators in community hospital-based residency programs. The award will be presented annually during Academic Internal Medicine Week.

Nomination Criteria

• The nominee must be a current member of APDIM at the time of nomination.
• The nominee must have participated in at least one previous APDIM meeting in the two years prior to the nomination submission.
• Selection of the award recipient will focus on (1) direct educational contributions; (2) program-building or curriculum development; and (3) duration and impact of these contributions. Those contributions that have been shared regionally or nationally, with impact on other training programs, will receive special consideration.
• The nominee must not be the recipient of an APDIM award in the past three award years.

Please note, if a nominee is a current board, council, or executive committee member at the time the award recipient is being selected, they are not eligible for award consideration.

Distinguished University Medical Educator Award

About the Award

The APDIM Distinguished University Medical Educator Award recognizes an individual or a team for outstanding contributions to the field of graduate medical education. The award is presented annually during Academic Internal Medicine Week.

Nomination Criteria

• The nominee must be a current member of APDIM at the time of nomination.
• The nominee must have participated in at least one previous APDIM meeting in the two years prior to the nomination submission.
• Evidence of gifted teaching. Examples include:
  • National, regional, or local teaching awards.
  • A record of invited presentations at national meetings or institutions other than their home institution.
  • Testimonials from mentees, students, or colleagues.
• A record of outstanding contributions to graduate medical education. Examples include:
  • Development of new and innovative curricula or educational programs.
  • Novel approaches to core teaching skills.
  • Synthesis of existing educational theory to enhance understanding by other educators.
  • Advocacy for high quality education on the national level.
• National recognition of expertise in medical education. Examples include:
• Involvement with organized medicine, educational regulatory agencies, or standard setting boards such as the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, American Board of Internal Medicine, American College of Physicians, APDIM, Liaison Committee for Medical Education, or the Residency Review Committee for Internal Medicine.
• Scholarly achievement in the broad field of education with dissemination of work beyond their home institution. Examples include:
  • Peer reviewed publications.
  • Invited editorials.
  • Invited or competitively selected workshops at national meetings.
  • Symposia or courses.
  • Web-based publication of educational tools, courses, or strategies.
• The nominee must not be the recipient of an APDIM award in the past three award years. Please note, if a nominee is a current board, council, or executive committee member at the time the award recipient is being selected, they are not eligible for award consideration.

About the Award

The APDIM Distinguished Community Associate Program Director Award recognizes an Associate Program Director or Core Faculty at a community-based program for outstanding contributions to the field of graduate medical education. This award honors those medical educators who have made a significant institutional, regional and/or national contribution based on their work as educators in residency training programs. The award is presented annually during Academic Internal Medicine Week.

Nomination Criteria

• The nominee must be a current APDIM member at the time of nomination.
• The nominee cannot be a prior Program Director.
• Nominees at early to mid-career level will receive special consideration.
• The nominee must have participated in at least one previous APDIM meeting in the two years prior to the nomination submission.
• The nominee must demonstrate innovation or excellence in graduate medical education through teaching, leadership, educational scholarship, and service to AAIM or APDIM.
• The nominee must not be the recipient of an APDIM award in the past three award years.

Please note, if a nominee is a current board, council, or executive committee member at the time the award recipient is being selected, they are not eligible for award consideration.

About the Award

The APDIM Distinguished University Associate Program Director Award recognizes an Associate Program Director or Core Faculty at a university-based program for outstanding contributions to the field of graduate medical education. This award honors those medical educators who have made a significant institutional, regional and/or national contribution based on their work as educators in residency training programs. The award is presented annually during Academic Internal Medicine Week.

Nomination Criteria

• The nominee must be a current APDIM member at the time of nomination.
• The nominee cannot be a prior Program Director.
• Nominees at early to mid-career level will receive special consideration.
• The nominee must have participated in at least one previous APDIM meeting in the two years prior to the nomination submission.
• The nominee must demonstrate innovation or excellence in graduate medical education through teaching, leadership, educational scholarship, and service to AAIM or APDIM.

Selection of the award recipient will focus on the following criteria:

• Direct teaching contributions.
• Leadership in program-building or curriculum development.
• Duration and impact of these educational contributions commensurate to career level.
• Educational scholarship and dissemination (e.g., oral presentations, publications, grant funding in education, teaching videos, online educational materials, popular writing, and/or prior abstract/workshop submissions to AAIM/APDIM meetings).
• Contributions that have been shared regionally or nationally, with impact to other training programs, will receive special consideration.

Program Administrator Excellence Award

About the Award

The APDIM Program Administrator Excellence Award is presented to an individual who has achieved professional excellence at the local, regional and/or national level in the field of program administration. Nominees for this award are individuals who have demonstrated exceptional work within their program, institution, or organization to improve, advance, and elevate their program and their profession. The award is presented at Academic Internal Medicine Week.

Nomination Criteria

• The nominee must be a current or former APDIM program administrator member at the time of nomination.
• The nominee must have demonstrated outstanding professional contributions at the institutional, regional, or national level. Excellence award topics may include, but are not limited to:
  • Contributions made while serving on a task force, committee, or special interest group that promotes the welfare and advancement of the program administrator profession.
  • Contributions made to advance the knowledge, understanding, and promotion of the internal medicine program administrator profession through publications or presentations at the institutional or national level.
  • Contributions made to an internal medicine program that identifies vision, commitment, personal and/or professional growth as integral elements of managing a successful residency training program.
  • Contributions to innovation within an internal medicine program that include, but are not limited to, diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, promotion of well-being and special curricula.
• The nominee must not be the recipient of an APDIM award in the past three award years.

Program Administrator Rising Star Award

About the Award

The APDIM Program Administrator Rising Star Award is presented to an emerging leader in the internal medicine GME community, including core programs and medicine subspecialties, whose record reflects ongoing and exceptional commitment to the profession. Candidates for this award are individuals who have demonstrated leadership, increased responsibility, and a sphere of impact. Examples include:

• Administrators that drive program improvement initiatives.
• Administrators who educate and/or collaborate with peer administrators.
• Administrators who seek educational opportunities beyond the required tasks of the role.

The award is presented at Academic Internal Medicine Week.

Nomination Criteria

• The nominee must be a current or former APDIM program administrator member at the time of nomination.
• The nominee must be within five years of their initial role in GME administration.
• The candidate must have demonstrated leadership potential within or beyond their role, evidence of increasing levels of responsibility, and have evidence of positive impact to their program/GME community, or to the program administrator profession as a whole.
• The nominee must not be the recipient of an APDIM award in the past three award years.
