Advances in technology and electronic medical records (EMRs) have placed an unprecedented amount of patient data at our fingertips. Yet in this information-rich environment, it is easy to forget that the most valuable source of clinical insight remains with the patient themselves. True clinical reasoning and patient care delivery require engaging directly with the patient and integrating their perspectives. Direct observation of learners with patients creates a foundation for memorable educational experiences for learners and equips clinician educators to create high-quality, competency-based, narrative evaluations. However, across many institutions, team-rounds take place in siloed workrooms around a computer.
This workshop emphasizes the benefits of bringing learners back to the bedside and keeping patients at the center of care and education. Presenters will address common barriers to bedside teaching and provide practical, evidence-informed strategies to overcome them. While time is a limited resource and bedside rounding is typically viewed as time consuming, it is an efficient tool to combine the many duties of a clinician educator including teaching and patient care. Attendees will leave with adaptable tools that support bedside clinical reasoning, patient engagement, and learner assessment — aligning educational goals with the realities of today’s clinical environment.
