Upstander Training In Graduate Medical Education

January 14, 2027, 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM | Webinar

Registration will open December 23.

There is a rise in hate crimes, with physicians being more and more targeted for the color of their skin, the religion they prescribe to, general appearance, gender, political views, or sexual orientation. There has been a movement for upstander training in K-12 for bullying and in undergraduate education for sexual assault. There is a void in this type of training in the medical setting, and more specifically, in graduate medical education.

The presenters have developed a six-step method to teach residents to be upstanders, a framework which encourages bystanders to become upstanders by committing to helping others and by suggesting safe actions to be taken in a heated situation. The webinar will include several role play examples when an upstander is needed and discuss what approach to take to become an upstander. The presenters will end discussing actionable takeaways of how to become an upstander in graduate medical education and to encourage residents to also become upstanders for their colleagues and patients.
