Given the continued growth of hospital census throughout the country and the transition to adding advanced practice providers (APPs) to the inpatient clinical care teams, it is important to have a developed orientation plan for both new and seasoned APPs that is personally tailored to the individual while insuring a standardized knowledge foundation that allows the APP to practice at the top of their license and sets the individual up for success in the long term.
In this presentation, presenters discuss a standard orientation plan for APPs in an academic health system that has been implemented in both a large tertiary care academic hospital and the suburban community hospitals in a large Midwest metropolitan city. Presenters introduce the APP onboarding checklist developed by the Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) and compare it to their process. Turnover rates in this program are compared to regional values provided in the State of Hospital Medicine published by SHM. A review of RVU production in APPs at one year, five years, and ten years who completed the standard orientation with a comparison to regional benchmarks are presented in the State of Hospital Medicine. The discussion will end with a review of challenges versus benefits of a prolonged orientation and how implementation of other inpatient service lines may occur.
