FY 2026 Year in Review

Dear Colleagues:

FY 2026 has been an exciting year for the Alliance! At the end of my first full year as the AAIM Chief Executive Officer, it is a pleasure to reflect on the work we have undertaken on behalf of academic internal medicine. Our community forums remain an active platform for peer-to-peer knowledge sharing and the exchange of ideas on the most critical challenges and opportunities we face. In addition, AAIM built even stronger relationships with key stakeholders to advance organizational priorities and advocate for issues important to members.

It was also a banner year for member engagement as evidenced by our largest registration ever for Academic Internal Medicine Week. Conference participants enjoyed unexpectedly beautiful Seattle weather while learning new skills, connecting with colleagues and building new relationships.

In addition, we officially began the implementation of our new Alliance governance structure with an overwhelming response to the open call for nominations and the appointment of our first AAIM President-Elect and three new AAIM Board Members at Large, all of whom began their terms on July 1. Our members, leaders, and volunteers are the very heart of the organization, so it is critical to ensure that the interests of our more than 14,000 members are represented as we embark on a new strategic planning process in FY 2027.

I hope you are proud of what the Alliance accomplished in FY 2026; the leaders, staff, and I will make sure we keep succeeding as we continue to be Even Better Together!

Highlights from FY 2026

  • Launched a redesigned IM.org, featuring improved search, navigation, and exclusive member-only content for a modern experience for visitors
  • Partnered with Intealth and ACP on campaigns to challenge proposed changes to H1-B and J-1 visa policies
  • Signed onto multiple coalition efforts to support funding for AHRQ, CDC, NIH, and VA
  • Collaborated with Intealth to share information on visa challenges for IMG residents and fellows
  • Worked closely with ERAS and NRMP to build even stronger awareness of the benefits of program signaling for residency and fellowship application
  • Submitted comments on proposed ACGME common program requirement revisions related to work hours, scholarly activity, nutrition, and dedicated time
  • Convened the highest registration in history for the 2026 APM Winter Meeting
  • Provided opportunities to members to speak directly with Intealth leaders via webinar and "drop in consultations" at the 2025 APDIM Fall Meeting
  • Provided guidance to NADIO on the recommendation to move the fellowship start date to no earlier than July 7 for all programs by July 2027
