Unlike previous AAMC compensation analyses, this snapshot incorporates clinical full-time equivalent (cFTE) and work relative value unit (wRVU) data, providing a more nuanced methodology to assess actual physician clinical workload and what is earned from that workload. Overall, men had a significantly higher mean cFTE than women. The analysis also identified significant differences by gender in wRVUs and median compensation, even when cFTE allocations were similar. Examining compensation at hiring provides institutions with an important opportunity to identify and address disparities before they widen. Since assistant professors typically enter with similar experience, differences observed in starting salaries can serve as a signal to institutions as to where inequities may compound over time.
