Exploring Opportunities to Improve Patient Access to Care Through Strategic Changes to GME Policy

Jul 29, 2026

Many across the United States—particularly those in rural and underserved communities—continue to face challenges accessing primary care and other essential health services. Despite substantial public investment in physician training, persistent access to care challenges have raised questions about how GME policy and financing could be better aligned with the nation’s health and workforce needs. Supported by the ABIM Foundation, Arnold Ventures, California Health Care Foundation, and the Commonwealth Fund, the National Academies convened a workshop on potential changes to GME policy that could help improve patient access to care. The Proceedings of a Workshop in Brief summarizes the presentations and discussions from the event.
