USMLE released a letter recognizing the impact of its recent announcement to reduce the number of dates Step exams will be offered beginning in 2028. The letter, jointly from leaders of NBME and Federation of State Medical Boards, discusses the evolving technological and security challenges faced by all high-stakes assessments that necessitate adaptation. Shifting to a designated testing dates model will allow more effective management of threats to score validity and protects the integrity of licensing decisions. The letter also emphasizes the 18-month advance notice provided to allow schools and programs to adjust policies and practices.
