Residency and Fellowship Educational Administrators

Dear Colleagues:

I welcome each of you to a new academic year which always comes with new challenges.  I am truly honored to serve and represent you as your chair of the Association of Program Directors in Internal Medicine (APDIM) Program Administrators Advisory Council (PAAC).

Over the past sixteen years that I have been involved in APDIM, I have witnessed the changes in our roles. We have evolved into a highly regarded educational professionals with knowledge and insight to graduate medical education. We come from many different institutional settings and hierarchy, but all face the same daily challenges. We are a group that gathers from near and far to attend two conferences each year to share best practices and learn from one another. So many dear friendships have been made over these years; I hope the same for you. We have a unique profession which only we understand!  The size of our membership has grown significantly along with meeting attendance. I look forward to seeing the enthusiasm continue.

We have hard working committee members represented by PA’s across the nation who take time to provide up to date data at conferences, TAGME information as well as plan workshop and plenaries, mentor/mentoring opportunities all based on your feedback.  As you have heard, this year’s conferences have a new structure.  I look forward to seeing you at the 2016 AAIM Skills Development Conference, which will be held October 20-22, 2016, at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center and Academic Internal Medicine Week 2017, which will be held March 19-22, 2017, at the Baltimore Convention Center. They are both promising to be very worthwhile--so I hope you will be able to attend both!

I want to remind you that I am here as your chair and friend, and please do not hesitate to reach out to me. Our PAAC councillors and commitee chairs are here for you as well.

Meetings

Program Administrators Meeting:
Held annually in conjunction with Academic Internal Medicine Week, this meeting focuses on the needs of program administrators. This meeting also includes a luncheon with chief residents and many opportunities to network with colleagues.

Registration for the Program Administrators Meeting at Academic Internal Medicine Week 2017 is now open!

Workshops at the AAIM Skills Development Conference:
Workshop sessions developed and presented by program administrators are held at every meeting.

Precourse for New Program Directors and Administrators:
This intense one-day precourse is designed for new program administrators and directors with fewer than three years experience in their role. This session is held every other fall at the AAIM Skills Development Conference.

Program Administrator Job Description and Salary Survey

The Program Administrators Advisory Council (PAAC) has prepared a position description as a standard for program administrators. The range of responsibilities outlined illustrates the diversity of the position; it cannot be a complete description of the position.

In 2011, PAAC distributed the Program Administrator Job Description and Salary Survey i to update the job description. Survey results help administrators write resumes, create job descriptions, and provide objective data regarding salary ranges of peers.

Survey Results

2016 APDIM PA Job Description and Salary Survey

Certification for Program Administrators:

National Certification is available for internal medicine residency administrators through Training Administrators of Graduate Medical Education (TAGME). Certification sets a national professional standard for administrators of core and subspecialty programs and enhances career development. Assessment is available in the Spring and Fall for residency and fellowship administrators. The application window for the Fall Assessment is March 1 – May 31.
