AAIM Comments on California's Travel Ban to Texas: A Message from Alliance Leadership

June 28, 2017

Dear Colleagues:

Thank you for your support of the Alliance and its annual conferences. Online registration is now open for the 2017 Alliance Skills and Leadership Conference, which will be held October 19-21 at the Gaylord Texan in Grapevine, TX. The new title of the conference is part of an effort to more accurately describe our meetings and help members identify content that will be of high value for them.

As you may know, California recently enacted a travel ban on several states that have passed legislation perceived as discriminating against the LGBTQ population. The list of banned states includes Texas, which will host both Alliance conferences in FY 2018.

While the Alliance applauds the efforts of the California state government to support the LGBTQ community, AAIM unfortunately cannot change the site of this meeting or Academic Internal Medicine Week, scheduled to be held March 18–21, 2018, in San Antonio, TX. We have contracts in place wherein canceling would be financially devastating to the Alliance. AAIM realizes that this decision will affect the ability of members at California's public institutions to attend the Skills and Leadership Conference as well as Academic Internal Medicine Week 2018 but is hopeful that some alternative approach may become available as we get closer to the conferences.

Again, thanks.  If you have questions about the conferences, AAIM, or this statement, please contact the Alliance office at (703) 341-4540 or AAIM@im.org at your convenience.

Sincerely,
