 ASP Highlights

Changing the Timeline for the Internal Medicine Fellowship Match

Through the Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine (AAIM) Redesign Task Force, ASP, along with other AAIM member organizations, is addressing education redesign issues from the clerkship through the fellowship and across all specialties.

As a result of ASP and AAIM's work to build consensus, the internal medicine subspecialty community has agreed to move the Medical Subspecialties Matching Program (MSMP) to the first Wednesday of December in the third year of residency. This change provides learners with a better timeline in which to make their decision about subspecialty training. The change will go into effect in 2012 for fellows who start July 1, 2013.

 T. Franklin Williams Scholars Program

Through strong partnerships with specialty societies and the generous commitment of the Atlantic Philanthropies (USA) Inc., and support of The John A.  Hartford Foundation, ASP developed a research award program for specialists in the early years of their first faculty appointment.  ASP partners with 12 internal medicine specialty societies to offer the Williams awards in 12 specialties, including general internal medicine.

Integrating Geriatrics Into the Specialties of Internal Medicine

Building on the efforts of previous grants, ASP develped a four-year project to further embed excellence of geriatrics and gerontology into internal medicine.  Through the continued support of the John A. Hartford Foundation, ASP will work with the National Institutes of Health and internal medicine specialty societies to further integrate geriatrics into the specialties of internal medicine.
