Precourse for Experienced Medical Educators: Adapting Internal Medicine Clerkships to the EPAs

Sunday, March 18, 2018

Developed by CDIM

The precourse is designed to explore ways medicine clerkship directors may address the challenges of adapting to the core EPAs for entering residency that proposed by AAMC in May 2014.  All medical students should be able to perform these 13 activities upon entering residency, regardless of their future career specialty.  The precourse will begin with an overview of the EPAs and the core EPA pilot.  Two speakers from medical schools funded by an AAMC grant will talk about what they have learned.  While most of the EPAs focus on skills that are traditionally taught in the medical school curriculum, several EPAs deal with new objectives.  Presenters will describe efforts to adopt EPAs addressing newer objectives.  Core clerkship and subinternship directors from medical schools that are not part of the AAMC pilot will discuss integrating interprofessional education and high value care into the internal medicine clerkship.   Through the precourse, participants will have time to reflect on information presented, ask questions, and share ideas about changes to curriculum elements.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this precourse, participants will be able to:

  • Discuss the 13 core EPAs for entering into residency.
  • Describe the core EPA pilot and the lessons learned.
  • Incorporate interprofessional education into the clerkships
  • Incorporate high value care into the clerkship.
  • Integrate activities to prepare students for the core EPAs into the clerkship.
