Affiliate members must have a faculty appointment at a medical school at the rank of professor. Affiliate members must be nominated by the institutional member from the candidate's affiliated medical school. Self-nominations are not accepted. Affiliate membership nominations are presented to the APM Board of Directors for final approval.

Emeritus membership is open to candidates who have previously been an institutional member of APM for no fewer than three consecutive years. Candidates may self-nominate or be nominated by a current APM institutional member.

APDIM membership is open to approved US and Canadian internal medicine residency programs. Programs may be represented by program directors, associate and assistant program directors, program coordinators and administrators, and other key faculty.

International program membership is available to programs outside of the US, Canada, and Puerto Rico.

ASP membership is open to all division chiefs, fellowship program directors, or other physician leaders who are involved in specialty internal medicine division leadership or fellowship education.

Specialty societies are also invited to join ASP.

CDIM represents the individuals responsible for teaching internal medicine to medical students. Each clerkship is represented by the clerkship director and other physicians and administrators involved in the medicine clerkship.

AIM represents business administrators in departments of internal medicine at medical schools and teaching hospitals.

MPPDA membership is open to program directors, associate and assistant program directors, and key faculty of accredited medicine-pediatrics residency training programs.
