APM is the only group within AAIM that does not accept new member applications. Membership in APM is by invitation only. All chairs of departments of internal medicine at US and Canadian medical schools accredited by the Liaison Committee for Medical Education or the Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools are invited to join APM as institutional members. Each institutional member may nominate two affiliate members. Affiliate members represent leaders in the department of medicine or in the academic internal medicine community in areas related to research, education, or clinical care.

APDIM membership is open to approved US and Canadian internal medicine residency programs. Programs may be represented by program directors, associate and assistant program directors, program coordinators and administrators, and other key faculty.

Departmental membership is offered to five or more divisions in a department of internal medicine; this option enrolls all the department's specialty divisions as members.

Divisional membership is open to all specialty internal medicine divisions with accredited training programs.

Individual membership is available to physicians involved in an accredited fellowship program who do not serve as division representatives and former members who no longer work in a division of internal medicine but wish to continue participating in the organization's activities.

Specialty societies are also invited to join ASP.

CDIM represents the individuals responsible for teaching internal medicine to medical students. Each clerkship is represented by the clerkship director and other physicians and administrators involved in the medicine clerkship.

AIM represents business administrators in departments of internal medicine at medical schools and teaching hospitals.

ACCM membership is open to physician leaders in departments of internal medicine responsible for the academic mission of the department. The physician leaders are at institutions which sponsor or support ACGME- or RCPSC- accredited internal medicine residency programs.

MPPDA membership is open to program directors, associate and assistant program directors, and key faculty of accredited medicine-pediatrics residency training programs.
