Evaluating the Effectiveness and Disseminating Best Practices Initiated under the ‘Integrating Geriatrics into Internal Medicine Subspecialties’ Program

The Association of Specialty Professors (ASP) has completed the project, “Evaluating the Effectiveness and Disseminating Best Practices Initiated under the ‘Integrating Geriatrics into Internal Medicine Subspecialties’ Program.” The project's goal was to assess the status of geriatrics integration into the subspecialty societies of internal medicine. To complete the project, ASP surveyed internal medicine subspecialty societies through in-person interviews at each society's headquarters and through evaluations of the societies’ websites, meetings, journals, and other products. The purpose of the assessment was to gauge the breadth and depth of geriatrics activities within these organizations and the maturation of these activities in the past several years. Specifically, ASP evaluated 10 subspecialty organizations targeted under earlier initiatives of the John A. Hartford Foundation-funded “Integrating Geriatrics into the Subspecialties of Internal Medicine” project.

At the conclusion of the project, ASP awarded five grants to support projects committed to developing or expanding geriatrics initiatives to further integrate geriatrics content into the society's subspecialty. The grants support the following projects:

• “Aging Success and the Complexities That Come with It” submitted by the American College of Chest Physicians.
• “Anemia in the Elderly: A Public Health Crisis in Hematology?” submitted by the American Society of Hematology.
• “Ask the Expert Series in Geriatric Oncology on People Living with Cancer (www.PLWC.org)” submitted by the American Society of Clinical Oncology Foundation.
• “Geriatric Oncology portal on ASCO.org (geriatric.asco.org)” submitted by the American Society of Clinical Oncology.
• “Importance of Basic Mechanisms of Cardiovascular Aging for Managing the Elderly Patient: A Mini-Course” submitted by the American College of Cardiology Foundation.
