Integrating Geriatrics into the Specialties of Internal Medicine:
Moving Forward from Awareness to Action

The Association of Specialty Professors (ASP)—the organization of specialty internal medicine divisions at medical schools and community teaching hospitals in the United States and Canada—began its project: “Integrating Geriatrics into the Specialties of Internal Medicine: Moving Forward from Awareness to Action,” after receiving a generous commitment of a $2.6 million dollar grant from the John A. Hartford Foundation in December 2006.

Project Goals

  • Develop a more robust academic base for geriatrics in the specialties of internal medicine.
  • Create working groups of specialists within professional societies focused on delivering specific products in research, education and clinical care issues essential to the well being of older adults.
  • Broaden the engagement of internal medicine specialty organizations in the agenda of improving care for elderly patients.
  • Enhance the competencies of currently practicing internal medicine specialists to care for older adults.
  • Increase interactions between the American Geriatrics Society and other specialty organizations.

Initiative Summary

Initiative 1:
ASP will partner with three internal medicine specialty organizations to hold a series of three meetings in each specialty. The goal of each meeting is to bring together specialists, geriatricians, representatives of the National Institute on Aging, and representatives of the parallel National Institutes of Health institute for the specialty to discuss research opportunities pertinent to older adults. One meeting will take place in 2007, three in 2008 and 2009, and two in 2010.

Initiative 2:
To further develop the research base, ASP will hold alumni meetings for the T. Franklin Williams Scholars Program in 2008 and 2010 and will fund visiting professorships to provide mentorship for the 49 new scholars named in 2007 through 2010.

Initiative 3:
In parallel with these efforts, ASP will work to develop special interest groups in 11 specialty societies in 2007 and provide them project funding in 2008, 2009, and 2010 to secure their place in the societies. Projects will include articulation of specialty-specific geriatric competencies in continuing education material and research network development. ASP has also sponsored a medicine specialties section within the American Geriatrics Society (AGS), which first met at the 2007 AGS annual meeting.
