Founded in 1980, The Seattle Public Library Foundation inspires the city’s philanthropic support of, advocacy for, and pride in the library. The library cultivates informed citizens, opens windows of opportunity, and helps the community stay connected. Donor support provides more than 100,000 new books and materials each year and supports countless library initiatives.
The Seattle Public Library Foundation has generated more than $256 million in grants and endowments as a nonprofit partner of the library, and its public-private advocacy work has secured a further $572M in public dollars over the past twenty years. The foundation provides over $5M in grants to the library each year, purchasing 1 in 3 books in circulation and supporting 45 equity-centered library programs. The foundation also supports early literacy, lifelong education efforts, workforce development, civic engagement, preservation of Seattle's history, and welcoming spaces for everyone in the community to enjoy.
