Collaborative Learning Community on Learning and Working Environment Optimization

Collaborative Learning Communities (CLCs) are defined groups with a commitment to shared goals, resources and responsibility and managed through collective authority and accountability.
The overall goal of the collaborative is to promote flexibility for internal medicine education to adapt to local patient, clinical, and educational microsystems with sufficient safeguards to ensure learner wellness.  This collaborative will identify the important components of the learning environment and working conditions that could be leveraged to enhance and promote education and thus optimizes the learning environment for all UME and GME learners.

The following are examples of issues that the collaborative might wish to consider:

  • Develop service specific leaner workload limits that reflect daily encounters, patient complexity, geographic distribution, IT support, throughput, and other variables across both inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Define a limit of faculty responsibilities when engaged in clinical supervision of learners in either inpatient or outpatient settings.
  • Define the interprofessional team and suggest workflows and resources to optimize the clinical care team.
  • Define factors that distinguish the necessary experiential learning from pure clinical service.
