Distinguished Medical Educator Award
About the Award
The APDIM™ Distinguished Medical Educator Award recognizes an individual or a team for outstanding contributions to the field of graduate medical education. The APDIM Distinguished Medical Educator Award is presented annually during Academic Internal Medicine Week.
Nomination Criteria
1. Evidence of gifted teaching.
Examples include:
- National, regional, or local teaching awards.
- A record of invited presentations at national meetings or institutions other than their home institution.
- Testimonials from mentees, students, or colleagues.
2. A record of outstanding contributions to graduate medical education.
Examples include:
- Development of new and innovative curricula or educational programs.
- Novel approaches to core teaching skills.
- Synthesis of existing educational theory to enhance understanding by other educators.
- Advocacy for high quality education on the national level.
3. National recognition of expertise in medical education.
Examples include:
- Involvement with organized medicine, educational regulatory agencies, or standard setting boards such as the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, American Board of Internal Medicine, American College of Physicians, APDIM, Liaison Committee for Medical Education,or the Residency Review Committee for Internal Medicine.
4. Scholarly achievement in the broad field of education with dissemination of work beyond their home institution.
Examples include:
- Peer reviewed publications.
- Invited editorials
- Invited or competitively selected workshops at national meetings.
- Symposia or courses.
- Web-based publication of educational tools, courses, or strategies.

- One nomination letter.
- The nominee's curriculum vitae.
Selection Process
The recipient is selected by the APDIM Council. All nominations will be considered for the year they are nominated as well as the following two years.
Program Administrator Service Award
About the Award
The APDIM Program Administrator Service Award is presented to a current or former program administrator who has demonstrated outstanding service to the association. The award is presented annually at the APDIM Program Administrators Meeting, held in conjunction with Academic Internal Medicine Week.
Nomination Criteria
- The candidate must be a current or former APDIM program administrator member.
- The candidate must have demonstrated outstanding contributions to the association.
- The candidate must be nominated by a current APDIM member.
- A letter affirming the candidate’s nomination must be submitted by a second nominator (this person does not need to be a current APDIM member).
Nomination Information
Nominations must be submitted online. Self-nominations are not accepted for this award.
A nomination packet must include:
- A completed nomination form.
- One nomination letter.
- One additional letter supporting the nomination. Please note, the committee will only consider one letter of support in addition to the first nominator’s letter.
- The nominee’s resume or curriculum vitae.
Service Award Topics
Service award topics may include, but are not limited to:
- Contributions made while serving as a member of APDIM Program Administrators Advisory Council, as a leader of an APDIM program administrators committee, task force, or special interest group.
- Contributions made while serving on an APDIM committee, task force, or special interest group.
- Contributions made while serving as a presenter at an APDIM national conference.
- Contributions made as a mentor to an APDIM program administrator.

Program Administrator Excellence Award
About the Award
The APDIM Program Administrator Excellence Award is presented to an individual who has achieved professional excellence at the local, regional and/or national level in the field of program administration. Nominees for this award are individuals who have demonstrated exceptional work within their program, institution, or organization to improve, advance, and elevate their program and their profession. The award is presented annually at the APDIM Program Administrators Meeting, held in conjunction with Academic Internal Medicine Week.
Nomination Criteria
- The candidate must be a current or former APDIM program administrator member.
- Current members of the APDIM Program Administrators Advisory Council may not be nominated.
- The candidate must have demonstrated outstanding professional contributions at the institutional, regional, or national level.
- The candidate must be nominated by a current APDIM member.
- A letter affirming the candidate’s nomination must be submitted by a second nominator (this person does not need to be a current APDIM member).

Excellence Award Topics
Excellence award topics may include, but are not limited to:
- Contributions made while serving on a task force, committee, or special interest group that promotes the welfare and advancement of the program administrator profession.
- Contributions made to advance the knowledge, understanding, and promotion of the internal medicine program administrator profession through publications or presentations at the institutional or national level.
- Contributions made to an internal medicine program that identifies vision, commitment, personal and/or professional growth as integral elements of managing a successful residency training program.
Selection Process
The recipient is selected by the APDIM Program Administrators Advisory Council. All nominations will be considered for the year they are nominated as well as the following two years as long as nominees continue to meet eligibility criteria.
Dema C. Daley Founders Award
About the Award
The APDIM Dema C. Daley Founders Award honors a member of the internal medicine community recognized nationally as an educator, innovator, and leader.
In 2003, APDIM dedicated the award to Dema C. Daley. Ms. Daley served as APDIM Executive Director from 1987 to 2000; recognizing her contributions, the APDIM Council promoted her to Executive Vice President in 2001, a position she held until her death in July 2002. During her 15 years as the association’s leader, Ms. Daley helped APDIM become “the preeminent professional organization in graduate medical education noted for its promotion of excellence and innovation in leadership and educational methodologies.”
The Dema C. Daley Founders Award is presented annually during Academic Internal Medicine Week.
Nomination Criteria
In selecting a recipient, predominant attention is given to a candidate’s contributions that have influenced areas of undergraduate and graduate medical education and the development of training programs in internal medicine, APDIM, or other organizations that are educationally focused.
