Leadership in Med-Peds Award
About the Award
The MPPDA Leadership in Med-Peds Award is a new award given to a physician who has made significant contribution to Medicine-Pediatrics (Med-Peds) as a profession. The award is presented each spring, alternating between the MPPDA Meeting and the Association of Pediatric Program Directors annual Spring Meeting.
Nomination Criteria
In selecting a recipient, predominant attention is given to a candidate who is outstanding in their clinical field, a national leader in med-peds, and has made a significant contribution to the education of med-peds residents, promoted student interest in training in med-peds, supported faculty development of med-peds, and supported the development and betterment of med-peds as a discipline. The candidate is not required to be a current member of MPPDA.
Nomination Information
Nominations must be submitted online. Self-nominations are accepted for this award.
A nomination packet must include:
- A completed nomination form.
- One nomination letter.
- The nominee’s curriculum vitae.
Selection Process
The recipient is selected by the MPPDA Executive Committee. All nominations will be considered for the year they are nominated as well as the following two years.
Walter W. Tunnessen, Jr., MD, Award
About the Award
The MPPDA Walter W. Tunnessen, Jr., MD, Award honors a graduating medicine-pediatrics resident who demonstrates many of the qualities that were admired in Dr. Tunnessen. The Walter W. Tunnessen, Jr., MD, Award is presented each spring, alternating between the MPPDA Meeting and the Association of Pediatric Program Directors annual Spring Meeting.
Nomination Criteria
Recognizing Dr. Tunnessen’s dedication and gifts as an educator, clinician, and advocate for children, MPPDA has established this award in his honor. Program directors may nominate one of their fourth-year residents for this award by submitting a letter (up to two pages) describing the qualities and accomplishments of the resident in the following areas:
- Education: the resident should be recognized by faculty, peers, and students as an excellent teacher and role model.
- Clinical Care: the resident should demonstrate compassion, altruism, and outstanding communication skills with patients and families.
- Advocacy: the resident should show awareness of the impact that the larger community has on the health of children and adults, and should show evidence of advocacy on behalf of patients or the larger community.

Brendan Kelly Award
About the Award:
Dr. Brendan Kelly served as the Associate Program Director of the Baystate Medicine-Pediatrics Program for 18 years. Throughout his medical career, Brendan was a skilled and passionate teacher of residents and medical students, earning a total of 19 medical student teaching awards. He was the founder and director of the first and only national conference for Med-Peds physicians. As a medical educator, Dr. Kelly was known as an incredibly engaging and effective teacher, a master of the art of physical diagnosis, and an expert in giving feedback and teaching professionalism. He was a tireless advocate for all those he cared about: his family, patients, students, colleagues, and nursing staff. At the national level, he was a highly regarded leader anda much beloved friend to all in the medicine-pediatrics community.
Nominating Criteria:
The Brendan Kelly Award is to be awarded annually by the MPPDA to an Associate Program Director of a Medicine-Pediatrics Residency Program who demonstrates the teaching excellence, collaborative leadership, and compassionate patient care that Dr. Kelly modeled so well. Program Directors may nominate an Associate Program Director who shall be in their position as APD at the time of the annual MPPDA meeting.
Program Administrator Award
About the Award
The MPPDA Program Administrator Award is presented to a current or former program administrator who has demonstrated outstanding service and contribution to the Med-Peds Program Directors Association. This award will be presented annually at the MPPDA meeting.
Nomination Criteria
- Nominations for the award must be submitted online
- The candidate must be a current or former MPPDA member
- The candidate must have demonstrated outstanding contribution to the association
- The candidate must be nominated by letter by a current MPPDA member
- A second nomination must be submitted by a current or former MPPDA member
2019 MPPDA Award Recipients
Leadership in Med-Peds Award: Allen R. Friedland, MD, FACP, FAAP
The 2019 MPPDA Leadership in Med-Peds Award recipient is Allen R. Friedland, MD, FACP, FAAP. The MPPDA Leadership in Med-Peds Award is an award given to a physician who has made significant contribution to Med-Peds as a profession. The award is presented annually at the MPPDA Annual Meeting.
According to his nominators, “Dr. Friedland’s enthusiasm, love, devotion, time-invested and to supporting med-peds training pathways is extraordinary.”
Dr. Friedland has been a leader and cheerleader for the med-peds world through his work with all three national med-peds organizations. He was MPPDA President during 2004-2005 and on the MPPDA Executive Council from 2003-2007. He served as American Academy of Pediatrics-Section on Medicine-Pediatrics (AAP-SOME) program chair for the national meeting from 2008-2013 and the chair of Academic and Education Committees of Executive Committee from 2009-2013. Dr. Friedland also chaired the AAP-SOME Executive Committee from 2012-2016 and is currently the AAP-SOME Chair of both the Communication and the Nominating committees. He currently serves as faculty advisor for National Med-Peds Resident Association. Within all these organizations, he has demonstrated leadership to the med-peds profession.
Dr. Friedland is presently Program Director of Medicine-Pediatrics Residency at The Medical Group of Christiana Care. He received his degree in medicine from State University of New York at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, as part of a 7-year BS and MD program from the Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education. He completed his residency in internal med-peds at University of Cincinnati Hospital and Children’s Hospital Medical Center of Cincinnati, where he also was chief resident.

Brendan Kelly Award: Colleen S. Monaghan, MD
The 2019 MPPDA Brendan P. Kelly, MD, Award recipient is Colleen S. Monaghan, MD. The MPPDA Brendan P. Kelly, MD, Award is awarded to an Associate Program Director of a Med-Peds residency program who demonstrates the teaching excellence, collaborative leadership, and compassionate patient care that Dr. Kelly modeled so well. The award is presented annually at the MPPDA Annual Meeting.
Dr. Monaghan is credited by her nominators as “an extremely caring and exceptional primary care physician.”
Dr. Monaghan has been a leader and innovator within the med-peds community. She developed a “Resident as Teacher Curriculum” for med-peds residents and the program has now been adopted by the internal medicine residency program. She also developed a “Rising Junior Curriculum” that continues to be successful over a decade later. According to her nominators, Dr. Monaghan has developed a regional reputation with patients from all over New England due to her holistic approach to their medical care. Her nominators cited, “Colleen also makes it a point to care for the entire family as she sees that this plays a critical role in overall health.”
Dr. Monaghan is currently the Associate Med-Peds Program Director at Harvard Medical School Brigham and Women's Hospital. She earned her degree in medicine at Raymond and Ruth Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. She completed her residency at Harvard Medical School Brigham and Women's Hospital.
Program Administrator Service Award: Kelly Barnes, C-TAGME
The 2019 MPPDA Program Administrator Service Award inaugural recipient is Kelly Barnes, C-TAGME. The MPPDA Program Administrator Service Award is presented to a current or former program administrator who has demonstrated outstanding service and contribution to the association. This award is presented annually at the MPPDA Annual Meeting.
Ms. Barnes’ nominators stated that “In addition to possessing all of the qualities of an exceptional administrator for her program at Maine Medical; Kelly has reached above and beyond with her involvement in the national organizations of MPPDA, NMPRA, and TAGME.”
Ms. Barnes has played an integral role in strengthening the med-ped program administrator community. She was a leader in the establishment of the AMPPA and is a past chair. In this role, she also served as ex officio on the MPPDA Executive Council. She currently is a member of the AMPPA Program Planning Committee.
Ms. Barnes is presently the Pediatric Residency Program Coordinator in the Department of Pediatrics at Maine Medical Center.
