Community Giving Initiative: SOAR
This year the SOAR (Students Overcome with Adequate Resources) Project will go to helping the McCall School. This is an outlook of the Elementary/Middle school: Gen. George A. McCall School, located at 7th and Spruce Streets, has been an educational hub for Philadelphia families for over 100 years. It is a public K–8 elementary school that serves the Washington Square West, Society Hill, Old City, and Chinatown catchment. The McCall School has 715 students enrolled. McCall takes pride in the diversity of the school community: approximately 78% of the students qualify as economically disadvantaged, 56% of the students are Asian American, 3% Hispanic, 13% African American, 20% Caucasian, and 8% identify as being of two or more races. Approximately 20% of the students require English as a Second Language education.
The McCall School has chosen a “Sun Smart” theme for students. With the SOAR Project helping this initiative we can help meet the needs of the McCall School by supplying: sunscreen, sunglasses, hats and visors.

The CDIM Clerkship Administrators giving initiative— Students Overcome with Adequate Resources (SOAR)— provides a way for participants to collect and donate needed school supplies to an underserved school in the host city of Academic Internal Medicine Week. What better way for education professionals to pay it forward than to help a deserving school meet the needs of children?

The school nurse has “wish list” items for storing supplies/medicines/ice packs. For monetary donations, you can donate via check payable to the McCall Home and School Association. Just be sure to add that you are with AAIM in the memo line and leave it in the box provided for monetary donations in Booth #7 in the Exhibit Hall.
Additionally, McCall has made an arrangement with Iron Hill Brewery, which would allow 20% of dinner proceeds on Monday, April 15 and Tuesday, April 16 to support their school. The site is now accepting reservations for April 15 and 16. Coupons for this initiative will be available at the conference at Booth #7.
As a group of caring individuals, we are positive that we can make a difference in the lives of young students. Let’s pull together and see how far they SOAR!!!!
