APM Memberships

Member Benefits

  • Invited to every APM meeting
  • Eligible to serve on all APM committees and task forces
  • Eligible to serve as an At-Large Member of the Council (conditional)
  • Eligible to vote on matters presented to the membership

Termination of Membership

An APM membership terminates if one of the following occurs:

  • The member leaves the institution from which membership was affiliated
  • The institutional member from the medical school affiliated with the membership decides to cancel the individual’s membership (Institutional Affiliate Members)
  • The member is no longer Chair of the (Internal) Medicine Department
  • The member chooses to terminate and notifies AAIM staff
  • The Institution does pay annual departmental membership dues

Criteria and Procedures

Institutional

Criteria

  • Be the Chair of the Department of Medicine at an LCME or CACMS accredited medical school

Procedure

  • Individual is a member automatically, provided departmental dues are paid

Institutional Affiliate

Criteria

  • The candidate must have interest in actively contributing to APM through its meetings, committees, and publications as well as helping the association pursue its mission of “providing leadership for academic internal medicine”
  • The candidate must have a faculty appointment at a medical school at the rank of professor
  • The candidate must have exhibited leadership in his or her department and in the academic internal medicine community in the areas of education, research, or clinical care. This leadership should be documented and easily identifiable

Procedure

  • The candidate must be nominated by the institutional member from the candidate’s affiliated medical school
  • Institutional Affiliate membership nominees are presented to the APM Council for final approval
  • Once a nominee is offered and accepts affiliate membership, his or her continued membership is based on good standing, such as participating in association activities

Community Department of Internal Medicine Chairs

Criteria

  • Supervise one or more ACGME approved internal medicine residency training program (including programs with initial accreditation)
  • Training programs have both inpatient and outpatient experiences
  • The chair is employed/appointed (not elected) and the position is full-time
  • The chair supervises at a minimum all educational and research programs in the department of internal medicine and ideally also supervises clinical programs within the institution
  • The department comprises at least five full-time internal medicine faculty in addition to the chair, all of whom are employed/appointed
  • The department is involved in research which includes quality improvement for patient care and/or education
  • Ideally the department hosts and supports internal medicine student rotations
  • Shall not be a faculty member at an LCME- or CACMS-accredited medical school (see Institutional Affiliate) 

Procedure

  • Community Chairs must complete an application which is presented to the APM Council for final approval
  • Once an applicant is offered and accepts membership, his or her continued membership is based on good standing, such as paying dues and participating in association activities

Osteopathic Department of Internal Medicine Chair

Criteria

  • Supervise one or more ACGME approved internal medicine residency training programs (including programs with initial accreditation)
  • Training programs have both inpatient and outpatient experiences
  • The department of internal medicine is a discreet department and not an amalgam of other primary care departments or a primary care department per se
  • The department has an internal medicine clerkship
  • The chair supervises at a minimum all educational and research programs in the department of internal medicine and ideally also supervises clinical programs within the institution
  • The department comprises at least five full-time internal medicine faculty in addition to the chair, all of whom are employed/appointed by the school
  • The department is involved in research which includes quality improvement for patient care and/or education
  • Shall not be a faculty member at an LCME- or CACMS-accredited medical school (see Institutional Affiliate)

Procedure

  • Osteopathic Chairs must complete an application which is presented to the APM Council for final approval

Emeritus

Criteria

  • Have previously been an Institutional Member (as defined in these guiding principles) of the association for no fewer than three consecutive years 

Procedure

  • The candidate should be nominated for emeritus membership by a current institutional member; however, individuals are allowed to self-nominate
  • Once an applicant is offered and accepts membership, his or her continued membership is based on good standing, such as continuous participation in association activities
