The primary goal of this project is to create an innovative and effective women’s health curriculum for Internal Medicine Residency Programs within an X+Y program structure. We anticipate that our curriculum will improve the knowledge, confidence, and skills proficiency of Internal Medicine Residents in addressing women’s health topics.Participating Institution: Stony Brook University HospitalSubmitting Author: Patricia Ng, MD
Outcomes: Since receiving grant support, we were able to create 2 of 3 women’s health workshops that have been delivered to all categorical IM residents in our program. In workshop #1, residents learned about geriatric women’s health topics including the diagnosis and management of osteoporosis, menopause, urinary incontinence and abnormal uterine bleeding. In workshop #2, learners reviewed preconception planning, contraception counseling, and managing medical co-morbidities during pregnancy (i.e. thyroid disease, diabetes, and acute illness). Our project is on-going and we are current creating a third workshop that will review cervical health, breast health, and PCOS. Each workshop uses the jigsaw teaching method and we found improvements in both resident knowledge and confidence in managing core women’s health topics.
Our team is currently in the process of writing up our study results into for MedEd Portal so our curricular materials are available to the medical community. The curriculum package will include instructions on how to deliver a jigsaw teaching session, workshop handouts and also women’s health pocket cards that were provided to each resident.
