Supporting Each Other: Peer Debriefing after Distressing Patient Care Events

When:  Jun 17, 2025 from 01:00 PM to 02:00 PM (ET)

Resident physicians encounter many scenarios over the course of their training in which they witness patient death and other distressing patient care events. Physicians can be emotionally impacted by these events and are often ill-equipped to cope with these feelings, which can lead to burnout and early career termination. Studies of medical trainees have demonstrated that the majority identify “talking with others” as an effective coping skill after these events, and peers are often considered the most trusted source of support. Despite this understanding, there remains an absence of formal strategies that prepare residents to provide emotional support to each other.

In this webinar, presenters will discuss an innovative curriculum for structured resident peer debriefing after difficult patient events with the goal of improving trainee coping skills and self-care. Faculty will discuss the burden of distress following adverse patient outcomes and review the resulting potential effects on physician self-care, work performance, and eventual increase in burnout. Multiple valid debriefing tools will be reviewed with focus on one key tool which will then be used in a model role play in which faculty incorporate the key components of a peer debrief. There will also be an opportunity for large group reflection and discussion regarding implementation strategies and overcoming potential barriers with the goal of enabling attendees to develop their own resident peer debriefing program.
