Over the past three years, what was the supplemental application in ERAS has evolved from an optional pilot to a core component of the internal medicine residency and fellowship applications. The rapidity of its adoption has addressed a longstanding need for the traditional application to feature more than publications, test scores, and grades. However, given the speed of its implementation, schools and programs have struggled to provide applicants and faculty with informed guidance in real time. At best, it results in a missed opportunity for the student's application to amplify key features of an applicant’s story; at worst, it presents unfocused or confusing information that detracts from the potential strength of the portfolio. This uncertainty introduces additional stress for applicants and supporting faculty in an already stressful, high stakes process. In this webinar, presenters will discuss the perspectives of learners, program directors, and educational leadership in both UME and GME, and the continued challenges of this evolving addition to the application file. Presenters will also discuss learner-focused and program-focused guidance as a strategy for maximizing the impact of the application and improved alignment of learners with programs, as well as faculty development programs to guide application committees on how to navigate this new era of expanded information.
