Using Kern’s Six-Step Approach to Build a Successful Competency-Based Clinician Educator Track

When:  May 23, 2023 from 02:00 PM to 03:00 PM (ET)

The clinician educator career path has received significant attention in the literature over the last decade, with recent progress in characterizing the competencies of the clinician educator. To assist residents in their professional identity formation as clinician educators, many residency programs have developed clinician educator tracks (CETs) to improve resident teaching skills and to prepare trainees for careers as educators. During this webinar, the presenters will briefly review the existing literature on clinician educator competencies, including Sherbino's competencies and the new ACGME competencies for clinician educators.

Following Kern’s Six-Step Model for Curriculum Development framework, each presenter will then discuss how the competencies of the clinician educator have been incorporated into each of our institutional CETs. Workshop participants will then work through a series of small groups activities utilizing a curriculum mapping worksheet based on Kern's six steps. Participants will be divided into groups based on whether they are starting or sustaining a CET program in their residency program. The groups will then utilize the worksheet to either create a curriculum skeleton for a CET program, or to revamp their current CET.
