Beyond PDSA: Building a QI Curriculum Based on A3 Principles

When:  Nov 14, 2024 from 01:00 PM to 02:00 PM (ET)

Quality improvement (QI) education in the medical profession has gained increasing attention over the past two decades. The importance of QI education is reflected in the ACGME Internal Medicine Milestones that emphasizes QI in the system-based practice competency. Despite this institutional emphasis, myriad educational demands and limited time for didactics necessitate novel approaches to incorporate QI principles into a crowded academic schedule.

A3 problem-solving provides one possible framework to deliver quality improvement education in more understandable and accessible terms. By embedding the A3 process into the outpatient weeks of an X+Y rotational scheduling structure, programs can adopt a longitudinal approach to quality improvement education that adheres to tenets of adult learning theory while inspiring trainees to learn QI theory and put it into practice in manageably sized components. In this session, we hope to empower attendees to utilize adult learning principles, QI tools, and mentoring relationships to reform and optimize their local QI didactics in a longitudinal format according to A3 principles.

In this session, presenters will empower attendees to utilize adult learning principles, QI tools, and mentoring relationships to reform and optimize their local QI didactics in a longitudinal format according to A3 principles.
