The goal of residency programs is to graduate compassionate, competent physicians who are ready to independently care for complex patients in a constantly changing medical landscape. It requires mastery of clinical skills and fostering of clinical curiosity and a commitment to lifelong learning that will serve individuals throughout their careers. There is much research in the business world regarding what drives individual behaviors and how to nurture intrinsic motivation. In an environment where medical students and residents are often motivated by extrinsic factors such as test scores and performance evaluations, this data on nurturing intrinsic motivation is not uniformly applied.
In this webinar, presenters will share data from the business world on what drives human behavior, including principles of intrinsic motivation, autonomy, mastery, and purpose as well as review strategies that have been proposed to stimulate intrinsic motivation and promote a growth mindset at a variety of levels. Participants will then be given an opportunity to apply these strategies to their work teaching students and residents. At the end of the session, participants will leave with ideas from presenters and peers on strategies to motivate learners at their institutions.
