Join AAIM leaders for the webinar "Coaching to Improve Self-Directed Learning in Graduate Medical Education" which will be held Tuesday, June 25, from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. EDT. Medical information is expanding exponentially, with the doubling time of medical knowledge projected at just 73 days. Resident physicians must continually acquire this medical knowledge through their self-directed learning (SDL). SDL emphasizes personal responsibility for growth in knowledge; however, trainees have variable strengths and weaknesses in SDL. Resident physicians may require scaffolding to engage effectively in their SDL, and it is incumbent upon medical educators to provide this scaffolding. Coaching by a trained medical educator can provide this scaffolding and empower learners to develop their SDL skills. With the assistance of a coach, resident physicians perform gap assessments, set learning goals, and formulate action plans. The presenters developed a coaching program at a mid-size university-affiliated military and civilian training program. Coaching is available for all resident physicians but is mandatory for those determined to be academically at risk. This webinar aims to ensure participants have the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to establish coaching relationships, facilitate resident reflection, and develop action plans.
