How to Launch A Clinician Educator Track- A Bottom Up, Inside Out Approach

When:  Dec 3, 2024 from 02:00 PM to 03:00 PM (ET)

Starting a clinical educator track (CET) from scratch can seem daunting, particularly during a pandemic. For one, it does not come with an easy-to-read instruction manual and recommended steps may not be linear. Even with the appropriate investment in time and resources, there are seen and unseen barriers within each institution that need to be skillfully navigated to realize programmatic goals. That said, there are also opportunities that are unique to each institution that may provide a path forward.

Regardless of resources or context, good intentions may still fail unless supported by a strategic plan. The presenters of this webinar developed an interdisciplinary, competency-based CET at UNMC over the past three years by taking a grassroots approach and engaging key stakeholders. Recruitment of partners was methodical: identifying champions who shared common interests and sailed around political headwinds to avoid cap-sizing. Like a snowball, the idea has materialized into a community of practice with 26 trainees, 37 mentors, 10 coaches, and 20 seminar facilitators (across five colleges on campus).

While the scope and trajectory of that CET initiative may not be the right recipe for everyone, the strategic lessons learned can be applied to any institution. Because CETs offer value in recruitment and retention of faculty, there is increasing interest in developing extra-curricular tracks that align with learner goals. Like any strategic initiative, it helps to begin with the end in mind. This webinar will help organize the elements, structures, stakeholders, and other institutional considerations that are important in developing a CET.
