Effective multidisciplinary communication and teamwork is essential for safe patient care and job satisfaction. Communication often breaks down during stress, such as when individuals are hungry, angry, lonely, or tired (HALT). Both physicians in training and nurses are often under multiple stressors making effective communication difficult to uphold in real time.
As medical educators, it is essential to arm trainees with skills to help them thrive under pressure. Empathic communication has been taught at all levels of medical education, aiming to improve communication with patients; however, it has not been similarly leveraged for multidisciplinary communication. This webinar will reframe an empathic communication skillset to improve communication between physicians in training and nursing colleagues.
Presenters will start by introducing the frameworks of LENS (Listen, Engage perspective taking, Notice your reaction, Share back others experience) and EPE (Elicit, Provide, Elicit) as the foundational skillset, focusing largely on the importance of perspective taking. Presenters will share actual scenarios, in the form of short video clips, which highlight these differing perspectives from both nurses and resident physicians. Presenters will close by providing tools to identify mutual miscommunication scenarios at their institution and discuss actionable ways to tailor use of empathic communication for enhanced multidisciplinary communication, whether teaching individually or in a group setting.
