Enhancing Learner Milestone Assessment through Direct Observation

When:  Nov 19, 2025 from 12:00 PM to 01:00 PM (ET)
This webinar will explore the pivotal role of direct observation in evaluating clinical performance and achieving milestone benchmarks within medical training programs. Direct observation allows the assessment of learners to determine if they can demonstrate competence in clinical situations and serves as an opportunity to give specific feedback to guide learners in enhancing core competencies. This evaluation method lives at the top evaluation tier, as delineated by Miller’s pyramid and framework to assess clinical competence. It also provides critical data for clinical competency committees to assess resident milestones.
Presenters will share successful strategies for embedding direct observations into existing curricula, offering insights from real-world implementations. Presenters will discuss a process to navigate the addition of direct observation into clinical experiences and demonstrate creation of an observation that fills an evaluation gap by selecting an existing tool or checklist, identifying the most important components to observe in their learners, and drafting a direct observation tool.
