The EPIC Problem of Ambulatory In-Basket Management in Residency Training

When:  Mar 6, 2023 from 01:00 PM to 02:00 PM (ET)

This webinar will give ambulatory teaching faculty who use Epic and similar EHRs in academic outpatient centers the opportunity to discuss best practices for resident-preceptor communication and supervision of trainees through use of the in-basket. The ACGME encourages experiential, context-driven training, however the application of these principles in the EHR setting, where trainees respond to patient messages and results, lacks documentation of best practices. Training programs and faculty struggle to identify optimal methods of in-basket communication that balance patient safety, trainee education, preceptor involvement, and communication with patients. In this collaborative workshop with facilitators from two different academic centers, participants will work in small groups using realistic cases to discuss and design best practices for supervision of trainees while managing patient EHR messages and results. Additionally, participants will discuss strategies to create learning opportunities during these EHR interactions, ensuring that trainees develop and utilize appropriate EHR communication skills.
